We really enjoyed St. Mary's KOA on the east side. I think the east side is best if you are into photography.

How much time might be good to see most of the west side a week or two weeks or more, planning on driving round to east side but if we can stay on the west side and drive by car all round that may work too.

On the west side are there more primitive campgrounds, like sort of off the grid?

As usual, Mark nails it. Up to a week on each side worked for us. We took a ride from Lake McDonald in one of the vintage buses and enjoyed it then went back on our own.

Glacier NP

We did that trip last year and had a great time. Stayed in the West KOA for a week, then drove around to the East side and stayed at that KOA for a week. The West KOA was probably one of the nicest parks that we've stayed in. Very clean and lots of amenities. I think we paid $65 a night. Then we went to East KOA and paid about the same and it was an eye sore of a park. The people running the place are very nice and helpful, but the parks do not compare. West side is close to small town activities and more commercialized, while the East side was more rustic and rural with little to do as far as night life or town hopping. We did see more animals on the East side and the traffic was light. Both sides a must see regardless of where you stay. Have fun......

X3 on Columbia Falls. The butcher shop next door makes great bison burgers
