GPS Update

Anyone heard anything further on GPS updates?

Has anyone used this www.lowclearances.com in their Entegra GPS?

Don't know about the site; however, we went ahead and purchased the Rand McNally 7720 for IPad. DW put our specs in and at least once, it has notified us of a low clearance bridge if we'd chosen a certain route through OK.

Just spent 1000 miles driving with my new 7720. Wifi doesn't work with Verizon iPhone hotspot frequency and speed limits are not totally dependable. Otherwise a decent GPS.

Pops,

Wife uses in her seat as navigator. There are several options on Amazon for mounting, but when she isn't navigating, she's reading.

The 7720 is nice, but for me and basic navigation, the unit in my Anthem is adequate. It's directions are generally good, and I don't worry if the Chinese know where I am at any given time

The good thing is going the IPad 7720 route is a couple hundred cheaper for the same capability.

Can you load custom POIs on the Rand McNally iPad app?

Google---"cup holder mounts for iPad" (there are a number of them)----I really like mine. I can move it to my GMC when the coach is parked and we are taking day trips---I also really like the Google maps app. now that they have done some things to it---best of both worlds with the Rand McNally 7720 too. Wife says I could still get lost in a small closet, but hey, I'm at an age that schedule is not even in my vocabulary anymore.

YeeeeeeHawwwwww

One by one or with a batch file with multiple entries, like a .CSV file?

StevieG:

I just read your post about Verizon iPhone hotspot not working with the 7720. I'm nearing a purchase decision between the 7720 and the iPad app, so would you please elaborate on this issue?

Hey Dave, Have you had problems with the Ipad 7720 and no cellular reception? Sounds like this is a better way to go so you can use the Ipad for other things.

Pops, You download and get updates via the internet (they suggest wifi versus cellular for the initial download and large updates). Software is $99.

You need the cellular connectivity for the GPS interface, so you'll definitely need the 3G/4G iPad...and naturally that costs more. of course, as you say, you can use it for more.

As I've said earlier in other posts, we've found some shortfalls and some mis-direction in it's use. DW is the direct user, and she says the verdict is still out. From my perspective, it has suggested some really weird routes, but we're still learning it's functionality. Good checklist approach to packing up and fuel tracker capabilities.

Certainly happy we paid $99 as opposed to the completely contained model...of course, we already have been "apple-ized"...all the way back to being one of the original 5000 buyers of the Mac 128 in the early 1980s (we still have it in its original box, along with the printer). Saving it for somebody's museum some day.

You don't have to have a cellular iPad. I have a 3rd Gen WiFi only iPad with a Bad Elf GPS Receiver, and it works fine. Amazon.com: Bad Elf 1000 30-Pin iPod/iPhone/iPad GPS Receiver: GPS & Navigation
