I use my coach for business, and I realy like having a nice place to stay when on the road. In the last two and a half months I have driven over 6000 miles. So far the coach has been great! Pulling my 6000 pound shop trailer to Daytona Bike Week cost me about one half MPG. I was getting around 7.5 to 8MPG with the trailer. I have gotten worse than that without it fighting the wind without a trailer. I installed a 30 amp plug at the transfer switch so the coach generator could power my shop trailer. This setup has been working great, and I put over 100 hours on the Generator on the last trip. If you have to spend your time living like Gypsy trailer trash in a grocery store parking lot, this is the way to go!

For the week when I was at Daytona, I had people every day comment on the coach. I got so sick of people asking what the gas mileage was I started telling them that it burns up everything I put in the tank.

So its off to Arkansas next month, Illinois and Tennessee in May, New York and Georgia in June, Indiana in July...

Sounds like things are going pretty well for you. Enjoy your travels. If people are that concerned about your mpg maybe you should ask if they would like to contribute as well. By the way that is a great looking coach.

MAN, it doesn't get any better than this. Beautiful Coach, one of the best built at any price, seeing the country, getting paid to travel, AND THE BEST PART, COACH, FUEL, PARKING ETC ALL TAX DEDUCTABLE. WOW, what a life, enjoy and try to wipe that smile off your face at least once in a while. Seriously, enjoy, sounds like a great life to me.

It isnt all glitz and glamour.... Here is my life for the last 48 hours.

Work 10 hours straight in Daytona Beach Florida till 6PM. Packup and hit the road.
Drive till you cant stand it anymore and start looking for a rest area to stop for the night.
1:30am and 3 rest areas later, I found one that wasnt full, halfway level, and big enough to take the trailer and extend a bedroom slide. I got 4 hours sleep
Drive another 15 hours straight until the 1100+ mile trip is complete
Park the bus and trailer in storage
unload and drive home
Passout.

I see Interstates, and thats about it. The business I use the coach for is not my full time job, so I do the motorcycle rallies in addition to my full time job. I dont have time to see anything other than what's between point A and B on the Interstate. It costs too much money in both time and fuel to deviate from anything other than whats business related. As far as being tax deductable, its a 100 percent business expense. I dont have time to take the family camping, and I hope that changes. I am trying to work in a family trip this summer. For many, an RV is an exciting adventure. For me, the RV is nothing more than a tool to make life a little more comfortable while on the road.

As far as people talking about the coach...
One guy who was looking at the Entegra was very curious about the fuel economy. More than likely because he didnt have the money to buy fuel let alone a 200K+ coach. He asked if his wife could go inside which prompted another discussion geared toward those who are not dealing in reality. On the flip side, one couple was in the process of trying to find an Aspire to buy. They didnt ask about the fuel economy.

Excellent post. You need to make a copy and save it to submit to the IRS when they question your deductions. FWIW, I hope your business is generating enough income to cover all these expenses, 'cause they don't allow you to claim losses for more than a few consecutive years And, if you do get to take the family camping, your business needs to charge you "something" for the portion that is "personal use", otherwise that's another "red flag" at IRS.

We had a great time, and the coach made all the difference in the world. Everyone thought the rv belonged to my dad. I think he had a lot of fun telling people that it belonged to his son. I feel a lot better taking him on cross country trips in this. The 15 hours runs in the truck were hard on him. We will be in the same spot next year so please come by and say hello.

For a business to claim the expenses, it must be shown that the intent of the business is to make a profit. There is nothing in the tax code that says you MUST make a profit. That being said, constant losses greatly increase the risk of audit and the need to prove you are in business to make money.

Having the RV in a corporation would result in the business charging for personal use. Having an RV in a sole proprietorship or single member LLC would result in personal use being determined by a ratio which is usually done on a mileage basis.

I hope that helps to clarify things.

I actually do it a little different here...
I personally own my coach, and pay the licensing, insurance and maintenance personally.
However, I then lease it to my C-Corp when it gets used for business. By the day, by the mile, and company pays for fuel. Groceries can also be absorbed by the company in lieu of business meals if properly documented, as well as camping in lieu of hotels. (fair market value of course)
Don't guess about it... Ignorance with the IRS is an expensive lesson, or "Stupid Tax" as they say
But don't get your tax advice here... Get a good CPA
