IFS Rebound Noise

After around 9,000 miles of driving, I have had this happen a few times. The situation has been as follows: At speeds above 45 mph when you go across an abrupt dip or at a bridge where one road surface is higher than the other, the coach goes down on the front suspension hard and then the coach rises up on the suspension also very hard. At this point I hear a loud noise like the suspension might be reaching the end of its travel. One might say the coach under went an aggressive porpoiseing action. The noise is always on the upward action of the front suspension.

Has anyone else with an Entegra IFS front axle encountered this noise?

This post might help. Also have the ride height checked.

Thanks Chuck.. I've read that thread and others about Koni shocks. I don't have steering or handling issues. Really looking to see if anyone else has encountered that noise. I have had a Spartan service center check it out and found nothing out of order on the front axle.

Larry, ours does what you're describing, sort of a end of travel knock.

If it happened under compression I'd tag it as hitting the bunp stop. As it happens on extension, it could be the shocks reaching the end of their stroke before the suspension reaches full extension.

Excepting that issue, things are perfect.

The shock absorber is supposed to prevent that from happening. The air bags only hold up the coach and on most coaches won't respond to transient movements. As long as your coach is riding at the correct height it sounds like your shocks need to be replaced or upgraded.

Matt,

Thank you. That is exactly the type of input I was hoping for.

I'm trying to determine how wide spread this phenomenon occurs. I do not have issues with the ride quality 99% of the time.

When I get done chasing other projects I will check the ride height.

While I know ride height can cause a multitude of issues, I'm having a hard time connecting that to this issue.

As Mark said, it could simply be whimpy shocks on rebound, where dampening isn't bad but rebound is a problem. The fix would be Koni's.

Ride height too high could theoretically cause an overextended shock on rebound. In our case however, I'd suspect height being too low if anything.

Mark, while you're reading this, can you please tell me how long it takes your Viair pump to bring the Front system up to pressure? Also, what is a good leak down rule of thumb for the front? I ask because my viair 450 can only achieve around 70PSI in around 5 minutes. Seems like a leak somewhere. We've also had chronic and sporadic low air warnings for the Front.

Thanks,

-Matt

I had the same problem as did many that also posted. I called it a bang in post. After they changed to Koni's it solved the problem. I am sorry I waited 2 years to do the update.
I can say from experience, the shocks prior to 2017 were to light for the weight and why Entegra changed them to larger shocks on the 2017 models.

A lot of 2016 owners on that post that also made the switch and were very pleased.

Are they now using the Koni EVO "99" shocks? I put a set on the Magna earlier this year but the late DW's health problems prevented us from getting out more than just once. Only drove about 150 miles and they seemed better than the old Koni adjustables set on full hard.

Tall Tex, YES it happens to us occasionally under certain rebound situations and it occurred with our previous SOB also.

We have about 11K on our coach now and have no complaints about ride/handling either. I will put EVO's on in the foreseeable future !

I generally get the system pumped up to over 110 from a baseline of 50 and that takes maybe 3 minutes.

Thanks Mark, that seems to line up with something being leaky in our Front system.

Now to see if I can locate a good source for all the possibilities I can start narrowing things down.

Might explain a ride height issue as our always seems low.

I have the same noise with my 16 Cornerstone. One of my ideas was the generator bouncing in the slide mechanism. As far as I can see there is nothing preventing slide rollers from moving up as the coach moves down quickly. And then the generator comes down with a bang.
