Koni shocks & Steering

First I have to thank Lynn and the others that have raved about Koni shocks......they are awesome!

Many of you know I have been fighting steering problems for 2 years. I'm going to say 2 simple shocks have corrected 98% of the problems.

We left Ft Myers pulling onto construction on I-75 that I have fought many time with the factory installed Bilsteins. The photo shows the typical rutted, uneven pavement we had for 200 miles that I am very familiar with.

Gone is the darting from right to left on uneven pavement.
Gone are the truck ruts that I followed or darted with, no matter what.
Gone are the chuck hole and bridge expansion joint bangs.
Gone is the constant drifting for no reason or change in the road surface that caused drifting.
Gone is the 1 to 2 inches of steering wheel play.
Gone is feeling every road bump jarring the steering wheel beating you to death.

I finally have the nice soft cushy ride and easy handling I had with the Travel Supreme. No more drifting and fighting the wheel. MY Entegra was definitely under shocked, I weighed today and the front axle is 16.560 lbs. The Bilsteins are rated for 14,000 lbs.

I am here to say, what a difference with the Koni's!!!! I wish I had installed them 2 year ago!!!

My steering wheel is still off centered, but I can finally drive comfortably without constantly fighting the wheel. The first time I have made happy hour without sore shoulders!

What an improvement!! I cannot say enough good. If you are having steering problems, try the Koni's after an alignment instead of chasing the problems for 2 years like I did. Best $350. I have ever spent!

Thanks Chuck for your post here and on the other thread re: the Konis. I'm sold. Definitely on the list for my visit to Spartan in September, and I may even alter our PNW route plan and go by Henderson's Lineup in Grants Pass OR to get it done sooner.

Great report Chuck! Back in '09 when we bought our Mountain Aire, it had 29k on it riding on a Spartan MM chassis..........factory Bilsteins on it, rode terrible, bouncing up and down bad off bridge ends.....and so on. After reading up on the fix on here, the Konis were installed, now have 69k on her and drives and rides wonderful..........beat money spent so far as you said!
Travel safe and enjoy your trip!

Thanks Chuck, happy for you to finally have a good driving report. I will call Spartan to see if these shocks will fit the 13 Aspire solid axle. I will replace all the shocks if Koni has a shock for the front.

Chuck, what are you going to call all the holes you won't notice any more? HA!

So glad you are finding the ride, comfort and steering you deserve with your coach.
Truly, happy for you both that you can focus on the sights and the adventure instead of the other things you've been fighting.
Safe travels this summer.
Tom

Having shocks that are too lightly valved really leads to some problems. I went through at least 5 sets and two sets of air bags on the DSDP trying to get it right. Oee of the sets they sent were FSD' for a 13,600# front end and we had the 14,600#. I took them off after a 70 mile round trip. Finally ended up with a tie between Koni adjustables and Bilstein Comfitracks. The Bilsteins were on the rig when we traded it.
Just put Koni EVO 99's under the front of the Magna last month and haven't even gotten it out of the driveway.

They helped our 16 Anthem also. Not as dramatic as Chuck but worth it for sure. Glad it made such a difference for Chuck. He deserves all the good luck he can get.

I'm glad to hear that. I just had a pair of Koni's delivered this week that I'll be putting on the front of my rig this weekend. Sounds like I might have made the right choice.
Thanks Chuck.

Happy for Your improvement.I made the switch to Koni also, but I don't understand how shocks can remove steering wheel play.

Yeah, in reading I had the same question? Interesting.

Don't know the answer to that, but they do on an Entegra Anthem.

I couldn't believe it either, but it did. I guess it was the "slop" with the front end from being under shocked. In my case it worked and I am not fighting the wheel anymore. First time in 14,600 miles I could take my hands off the wheel and I didn't head in another direction.
