North Texas to Las Vegas

We have 2 birthdays in Idaho in March. The Wyoming route doesn't make sense this time of year. Thru Las Vegas is doable.

The question is which is better, the 200 additional miles via El Paso or wind and cold potential via Albuquerque to save most of a day? We plan to leave in the next 7-10 days.

Opinions please.

I would call an audible at game time depending on the weather conditions.

Actually, weather.com has a 10 day forecast button that isn't bad. The meteorologist in me says take the Southern route. The pattern is going to be persistent with cold dominating the eastern 2/3rds of the country for the next week or so (by the way, predicted this cold snap the first week in Jan..different story).

In this pattern the Texas Panhandle to ABQ will be very susceptible to harsh weather. with every upper air system that comes across the Southern Rockies. FTW to ABI is not out of the woods either, but better chances. Through Vegas (and it has been beautiful) up through Reno (it has been generally dry) would be my choice. Otherwise give yourself an extra day to two to sit in a truck stop; as you know, I-40 is a bear if there is any weather.

Fuel is down a buck a gallon...what's a few extra miles. JMHO, but I'd take the Southern route.

I relied on AF weather for 26 1/2 years. Sounds like a good idea to keep that trend!

Thanks!

If you go through Tucson...call. The beer is always cold and the food is fit for human consumption.

There's a bear of a storm bearing down on the Texas Panhandle as we speak. Not likely to impact weather down to I10. Take I10 dude. When you get to east El Paso Take The Loop 375 bypass unless it's 2am. Do not stay anywhere near El Paso. Overnight in Las Cruces.

BTW, I had my roof inspected by Entegra van last Wednesday and everything was cool. He was headed to Phoenix.

What is the danger of driving I10 thru El Paso during daylight. It looks like a pretty straight shot. 375 takes you thru some mountains. We are headed to Arizona from Kerrville starting on March 1st.

I have found the I-10 through El Paso not that bad except of rush hour which, like any major metro area is awful.

I have done I 10 through El Paso several times and it was crowded but moved along as fast as I wanted to go.

Only a problem during rush hour when and accident can make it several hours long. Always check traffic if you can. If I10 is moving then it's shorter than Loop 375. The loop is now completed except at the east end.
