I change my own oil and the biggest pain is the dip stick tube. I use a "web" type of strap wrench that I've had for close to 40 years. This web material I can shove up between the block of the engine and the filter.
I don't know if they still make this type of wrench or not

Put another way,
Man asks for the Time of Day and is told how the watch works.

I've been using this type of strap wrench for years https://www.amazon.com/Performance-T...s=strap+wrench and it works very well on a Cummins 450 with the 9009 filter. This wrench Will crush the 9009 filter if you position it too far up the filter. Push the strap up on the filter until the bottom of the filter (nearest the ground) is level with the lower end of the strap and use a half inch ratchet or breaker bar. Turn the filter a quarter turn, punch a hole in the bottom with a Phillips screwdriver to drain and then remove the filter. I got my wrench at a NAPA store, but all auto supply stores carry them.

Finally Off
First, let me thank everyone for their suggestions on the type of wrench that they have used for this job "OR" the idea of what wrench might work. Turns out after going thru 4 different wrenches and nothing working for me, I took the coach down the street to a big rig fleet service shop and this is what they pulled it off with.

Yep, jaw type wrench, it's what works for me, except mine is a double jaw, larger flanges that grabs both sides of the filter and fits on the bottom making it easy to get to. Same principle, a NAPA item.

I forget the size, but the socket fits either a 3/8” or 1/2” drive.
I usually use an extension and ratchet.

Turning the ratchet rotates a gear that in turn rotates the fingers to tighten up in the desired direction, whether tightening up or loosening.
The individual fingers are knurled and bite into the filter quite effectively.
Typically, I loosen until I can spin it by hand, then pull a plastic bag up to the filter top and use the bag to catch the filter and any errant drops of oil that may escape.
I do the hydraulic and fuel filters the same way, easy peasy.
