Onan 12.5 KW Generator

We have nothing but problems with this generator. Now needs the fourth set of brushes. Stator has been replaced. Now we are told it needs a rotor. Only 700 hours on the unit. Onan WILL NOT cover any of this because it has over 500 hours. Is this Onan's policy: Put bandaids on problems until warranty is up; then deny any responsibiity for manufacturing defects?

My Onan has performed flawlessly and has been no problem, but then again, I am currently at about 150 hours. My fingers are crossed that I have years of no problem. Because of the no-problems, I have not had any experience with working with the company (sorry).

Seems to me that you have essentially 2 choices: repair it, or not repair it. I would be frustrated with the cost because I would expect that most generators should be able to run for thousands of hours before needing major overhauls.

Good luck....

Gary

I am approaching 500 hours on mine...once the Command 30 was fixed, no problems with the whole system.

I have over 1200 hrs on ours, use it hard and service it every 250 hours. We run it a lot to replace the insufficient dash air.

Dave, that does not sound normal at all. Out of curiosity, have you let the generator warm up for 2 minutes before putting a load on it, then taking the load off 2 minutes before shutting down?

Mine has a delay built in for starting but I just shut the gen down when done. I have just over 400 hrs on mine.

I should not say this...... but I have not worried about a load or no load on the generator for whatever period of time anyone says.... If this really was a problem, Onan or the Command 30 would build this "in". I have said before, but will repeat......a first year electrical engineer (or many 10th graders in high school) would take no more than 30 minutes to design the circuit and make the circuit board to accomplish the initial delay and the shut down cool down period. This has to be a "wives tale". These generators are designed to handle 12.5 Kw of power. I have a 50 Kw Onan totally automatic natural gas powered generator powering my whole house with two computer controlled 200 amps of 240 V load shedding transfer switches, and it idles about 30 seconds before it takes the entire house at full power (engine is a Ford V-6), and it idles down for about 30 sec after a continuous 2 day hurricane power episode.

My Command 30 does not throw the load to the genny until about 40 seconds after start. I have not worried about shut down. Now I may regret writing this, but so far so good.

If this ever made any sense, I would guess it was at the period of time when we were advised to let our Cummins cool down and gradually warm up, and I believe everyone knows that Spartan now says, no need for any of that ..... that was a recommendation on "old" diesel technology, but not current models.

On a different aspect of this thread, I generally do not need to run the genny during travel, even during the summer in the south. Since there are only of two of us and we are "always" belted into our official chairs when moving, we have found the dash AC (now that it has been fixed) keeps the cab comfortable. We have added roof ACs a couple of time when the outside temp is literally up in the 100s and the cab dash just can't do the job.

Gary

Yes. This also seems not right to me.. these generators are designed to run ... I have seen some of these over 4,000 hours and only basic services were done... at 500 hours it's probably not even broke in.
Seems you have something going on causing your continued issues
IMO

For those that do not follow the owners manual, that's OK. However, here is the copy and paste from the current Onan 12500 owners manual. I figured Cummins wrote this procedure for a reason.

10
Starting And Stopping Procedures
Your Cummins Onan generator can be started and stopped from the integral
control panel on the generator, or from the optional remote control panel inside the
vehicle if your RV is so equipped. Your Operator’s Manual outlines the simple steps
for starting and stopping. Remember to:
• Before starting the generator, turn off air conditioners and large electrical loads.
• Before starting in cold weather, turn off all appliances for best long-term
performance.
• Prime by holding stop (all Quiet Diesels, Quiet Gas 3600-7000).

To start
- press and hold start at the control panel or at the set.
- Quiet Diesel: auto pre-heat flash, then crank/start
- Don’t over-crank with no start
• Before turning on appliances, let the generator warm up for a few minutes.

Turn off air conditioners and large electrical loads and allow the generator to run
for 3-5 minutes before stopping, to allow the generator to cool down.

I have around 1500 hours on mine. Only issue I have had is I start generator and right away it stops with error code. Easy fix. I pull out generator and pull side cover. Take 3 number 10 screws out which holds the radiator bottle and slide it out. Then I remove the wire harness connector from the brain and reseat it. Generator fires right up and I am good for another 300 hours till it happens again

Chuck, I'll give you a progress report in 5 years and we can compare notes.

I recently had the fuel pump fail 1 month out of warranty with ~975 hours on it. Failure seemed premature to me.
