Onan generator question

Basically the gen will not start. Started as an intermittent problem but seems repeatable now. Cutting to the chase I have the gen out on the slide and it will not start using the manual switch. When I hold the switch in prime or start the light flashes constantly. The generator just emits a steady rapid clicking. Sort of like a starter relay or solenoid with low battery.... Disconnected the remote start control cable wiring connector with no change in symptoms...so it is not in the coach controls I think.

This is an early build 2013 Anthem BTW.

Disconnected and cleaned all the battery/power/ground cable connections with no change.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I have a service apt at Cummins Bridgeway Tuesday to find out the problem hopefully so just guessing for now.

Make sure your fuel tank is more than 1/4 full.

The flashing light should indicate a fault code. Check out this video.

Yep, it was never less than 1/2 and is full now while it is repeatably not starting.

Yep ,saw the video and got the same basic briefing from a tech at Cummins Bridgeway in Novi, Mich.

That is why I think something has happened to the circuit board in the unit as it just flashes constantly when holding down the prime or start switches. It does not seem to flash in any sort of pattern and does not lash unless I am holding the switch

Just wondered if anyone had run into anything like this before so I can be mo' smarter when I take the coach to BC in Grand Rapids Tuesday.

I will check but gen was serviced with all filters this spring. Good input though. The thing that bothers me is the constant clicking when I hold the start switch. It will not even crank.

Reminds me to add gen fuel filter to spare parts pile.....

Have you tried holding the battery boost button while holding the gen start button? Could be a battery problem.

Yes, that was the first thought when I heard the clicking. It had no effect. The house batteries are at full charged from being plugged in so I do not think it is the battery voltage.

Does the generator draw starting power from the house or chassis batteries?

I had the same problem. The plug on the top right front of the gen had no gasket and the dash ac was dripping on it. Cleaned the plug, new gasket and put a drain hose on the dash ac. Never another problem.

If a starter solenoid receives insufficient power from the battery, it will fail to start the motor, and may produce a rapid clicking sound. The lack of power can be caused by a low battery, by corroded or loose connections in the battery cable, or by a damaged positive (red) cable from the battery. Any of these problems will result in some, but not enough, power being sent to the solenoid, which means that the solenoid will only begin to push the engagement gear, making the metallic click sound. Since you did the above maybe just a bad solenoid.

I had a similar problem and had to replace the K2 relay. They have had a high failure rate and have an improved version now.
