Opinions on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

We are heading from Myrtle Beach up to New Jersey. We would like to miss Washington and looking at the map we are wondering about taking 13 up through Maryland.

The 22 miles of tunnels and the Chesapeake bridge is on the route we would have to take so we are interested in how others have made that crossing in their motorhomes.

Thanks

Did it several times in other Motorhomes and loved the drive. There's a pull off about half way through that was nice. Go for it!

Been down that route several times with my 39' bounder towing a car behind; no problems, much less traffic and lots to see.

We did it in our Anthem. Our CB antenna was clicking on the roof of both tunnels as we passed through. The tunnels appear narrow and "of course" that is where you will meet an 18 wheeler. Just take it easy and slowly and you will be OK. Beautiful drive.

Been there, did it too. Watch for the signs dealing with LP in the coach. Follow them to insure no problem. Other than that, it is a very interesting trip over and under the water.
The drive up through the peninsula is beautiful, especially in the spring. Enjoy.

Lived at near the bridge fir several years. Just check wind conditions for the day. Occasional they will shut the bridge down for wind. Not very often though.

Loved it! It was a great ride, would do it again tomorrow. A large aircraft carrier was visible on one side of the bride, went into one of tunnels and the carrier was on the other side of the bridge when we came back up. Neat to pass under an aircraft carrier, not may MH's can say they've done that.
We still talk about that experience.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I think that we will go that route on the way back to Jersey. Now, need to find a place to stay in or around the Norfolk area for the night before going over.

The tunnel sections are actually only a small portion of the crossing. I've done it a few times in a car, wouldn't hesitate to take an RV through.
One bridge I will NEVER cross again is route 301 at the VA/MD state line. It seems like it's about a 1/4 mile high, two lanes, oncoming traffic held on their side by a yellow line and nothing else. Took the MH towing a dolly across that. Never again. Every oncoming 18 wheeler threatened to swap mirrors with me.

We stayed at a nice KOA (choke-choke) just past Norfork on the Hwy to Virginia Beach. We spent a week there, then crossed the bridge from there.

If a parking lot will work about 30 miles from Norfolk there is a large parking lot on the North side of the bridge opposite the Southbound toll booths. There is a information center and rest rooms there. They allow 48 hour parking there for RV's and trucks. Stopped there once overnight this time of the year and there was several RV's and about a dozen trucks. The lot seems to be able to hold close to a 70 large vehicles plus another 40 cars. They also allow overnighting at the rest area midway across on the island by the tunnel entrance but depending on traffic it's tight getting around.

If you stay at VA Beach KOA. F-18 fighters start flying about 8:30 during the week, normally all recovered by 4 pm. Park is not in the flight path of the main runway. Noise is not obtrusive. There is a bike path, separate from General Booth Blvd, that you can take all the way to the board walk, about 2 miles. Red Wing public golf course across the street and marine science museum 1/2 mile away. If you decide to stay there call and ask them the best route in. There is a easier way than taking the highway all the way to the beach

This is a great way to go. Last summer on our way back to NJ from the Outer Banks, we stayed at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground. While campground spaces are fairly packed in, you can walk to the beach and was a nice stopping point.
