Outer banks campgrounds

We're thinking of going to the Outer Banks in August. Does anyone have recommendations for campgrounds in that area...ones that can accommodate our bus with 30ft trailer? hope to hear from somebody! Thanks, Lover

None from me other than to suggest checking for ratings via Reviews of RV Parks and Campgrounds - RV Park Reviews.

OBX

We love the Outer Banks but beware camping in August is waaaayyyy hot!!!!

We stayed at Camp Hateras and Beachcomber and they were okay. The National Park is nice and right on the dunes. Be prepared once you start driving down the outer banks away from Kitty Hawk the restaraunts are not very numerous. When we got to a campground we generally cooked our meal. The spots in the NP near Ocracoke are primitive but look like they handle any size RV. The NP spots are right on the dunes and have a nice breeze and nice sunset/sunrise views.

One mistake we made two years ago was we drove to Ocracoke then took the ferry with motorhome and toad (way cool, but book ahead with NC ferry service) and camped on Ocracoke island. The campground is nice but no electricity. .....also no generators after 10 PM. There isn't a tree higher than 5 ft for miles. It was 90 deg and we thought we'd get ocean breeze at night but the CG is built in a bowl behind 50 ft berms and there was zero wind. We cooked. To add to the fun there were biting flies. The camping is beautiful but next time I'll do it in a cooler month.

Be mindfull of Hurricane season gets started in earnest in late Aug early Sep. Just watch the news and if one comes that way head out, but don't let the season keep you from going!
Unless you are adventurous and want to dry camp on the dunes at the NP you need full hookups in August at the OBX. Definitely take a day trip in the toad to Ocracoke Island.

Thank you both VERY much for the info!

Dave, do you have any input on Myrtle Beach? Thanks, Lover.

Myrtle Beach

I know a little about Myrtle Beach, I lived there for 3 years when I flew A10s (a.k.a. Hogdriver) in the Air Force in the 80s. Myrtle Beach State Park is fantastic. I stayed there about 4 years ago. It is a 100 yd walk to the beach and the sites are heavily wooded. I mean like dark pine forest wooded. They have 30 amp but I don't recall any other services. The NC crowd pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach in flocks and the commercial campgrounds are sites 20 ft apart and zero shade. A lot of folks like Ocean Lakes or PirateLand. Other than those, I can 't help.

Murrells Inlet is the place for seafood, and Pawley's Island is worth a stop.

We just arrived today at Camp Hatteras, Waves, NC. There is a large open area at the entry for a large trailer. The sites will be too small to keep it on site.
