Outside Odor
Past few days I have noticed a black or grey tank smell while outside the coach.
I am boondocking in my backyard.
Grey is at 14
Black is 50
I have not noticed that odor outside the coach before unless I was dumping tanks.
Are there a few things I need to check -- or is this normal and I have not been paying attention?
Curt

It could be your house batteries. Check in your battery compartment for smell.

I had a similar issue with my coach, I changed my tank vent covers to the ones sold by Drain Master. I have not had the problem since. I cannot say for certain that venting was the issue but do far no more smells.

Curt, I have experienced a black tank smell outside once, but that was when the air was dead still and it was cool outside, first thing in the morning. Once the breeze came up it was gone. I figured it was coming from the tank vent. Was your odor in the same type of conditions or all the time?
A few things to check, is that the tank release valve is closed tight. Is the odor stronger in the water bay or on the roof? If on the roof this might help. Amazon.com: Camco 40595 Cyclone Sewer Plumbing Vent: Automotive
If there are no signs of leakage, I would check the roof vent. As Art mentioned, check the batteries that they are full and not gassing.

Curt,
I have had a faint order also with the conditions described above. Calm air. Our MH is used 3-4 days a week on our property.
Also, what was the outcome of the slide sticking?

Dave those look interesting. I never did like the looks of the Cyclone vents, they look like a rooster on the roof.

If you don't eliminate the odor in the tank it doesn't matter what you put on the roof, the odor is still there and eventually you will smell it. Those roof doodads are designed to reduce possible odors inside the coach (that's what the link ad says).
Find a tank additive (pine sol, dawn, comm RV tank cleaners) that suits you for your black & gray tanks, add it AFTER you dump, mix in a little water, drive home coating the tank and your odors will disappear. Summer temps will determine how much more to add.

My experience is just the opposite. If your vent system is working properly, the odors will go up into the atmosphere and you will never smell them. One rare exception is the still and cold air mentioned above, In some such situations there can be a downdraft that carries the fumes downward, even though the fumes are lighter than air and normally go up and away from your vents. This situation is very rare and has happened to me only a couple of times over 11 years of RVing.
I use no deodorizer or tank treatments and I have no smell. I do have RV 360 vent caps and these totally solved any problems for me. For a few years I used tank treatments and had spotty results, until a friend told me he uses nothing and asked why I was wasting my money. I installed the new vent caps and now I too use nothing in the tanks. I have a full gallon of tank treatment chemicals that I have been carrying around unused for years because I just don't need it.

often times the smell of propane is confused with sewer odor, i have had the propane regulator fail on my aspire, if its windy outside you likley wont smell it, if not you may. get a bottle of soapy water and spray the regulator real good and watch for bubbles. mine did not fail at the connection it was the diaphram.

RVs are smaller than a normal home and the vent stack is much closer to where you are when you're around the motorhome than your home, where the vents are way up on the roof. It is quite normal to smell some odor around motorhomes in active use when they are hooked up and the toilet is being regularly used. It will happen when you get a breeze that blows the air towards you particularly if a downdraft is created. It is normally temporary.
A more problematic odor occurs if your sewer hose is connected loosely to an RV park sewer connection. In this case you'll get a direct vent of sewer gasses at ground level next to the coach. Get the right hardware to connect the sewer properly to avoid this.
Also, if your park has a badly vented sewer system (many, many do), the vent for the park system will become the vent on your RV when you leave the black tank valve open.
I know this is a controversial issue and many believe the only correct way to operate is to leave the valve closed and dump ever day or two. I know from experience that my tank is well designed and a good flush puts the waste down the hose and not in the tank so I leave mine open. If the system is very badly vented, and smells, you may need to keep the black tank valve closed and only open it to dump occasionally. Then you'll only get gasses venting from your own tank, not the parks sewers.
Lastly, if the RV is in storage there shouldn't be anything in the tank to smell. Flush the tank until all waste is eliminated prior to laying it up, then put a small amount of water and some of the blue tank deodorizer stuff in it. Sewer odor on an RV in storage means that waste is sitting in the tank rotting and that's not good for your RV.

How many tank vent caps do I need to order and where are they located on the roof?
