Pilgrimage to Middlebury

We have decided to make a trip to Middlebury and Napanee in June, for factory tours at both Entegra and Newmar. We will be spending approx. 4 days in the area and need recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing. Here are some of the places we have picked out from posts on this website.

RISE N ROLL!!!!!

Amish Country Kitchen

RV Hall of Fame

Notre Dame (on our way back to Chicago)

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We prefer local cuisine.

Shipshewana flea market.
Elkhart County Fair is one of the largest County fairs in the nation, but it isn't until July I believe.
On your way to or from, head down I65 to Fair Oaks Dairy, an absolutely amazing working diary farm. Tours are fascinating, and the cheese, ice cream, etc are top notch.

Yoder's Meat market in Shipshewana. Make sure your freezer is empty before arrival. Stock up, and then buy more.

Also save room for GUGGISBERG CHEESE , BEN's BAKERY and E&S Groceries.

If you stay at SHIPSHEWANA SOUTH CAMPGROUND there is a walking path to BEN's Bakery 😀👍😄

Everybody is pointing you in the right direction. The Blue Gate Restaurant in Shipshewanna is another great Amish restaurant. Four days is not enough for that great part of the country.

So how much is the 1/2 split as I believe this should fit in our freezer!

To learn about the religious background of that area you can't beat the Menno Hof cultural center near Shipshewana. Very enlightening.
Unlike the other replies, mine is not fattening. 😀

Be prepared for all these places to be simply infested with tourists just like you. Be sure to spend lots of time simply driving through the countryside surrounding Ship. And fully absorbing the lifestyle of the "normal" Amish families who occupy this area of earth..... The diesel powered dairy farms, the modern and high tech houses in this anti-high tech world, the Amish families coming together to watch a "play" which generates money for a widow struggling financially, 100 horse drawn buggies tied up at a community center, a buggy in front of a Pediatrician's office, and the amazing sound of horses 's fast clip clooping down the road. Grasp how different that world is probably from yours and yet how it fits a unique space. If you miss that, then, to me, you miss the whole place.

One of the things I enjoyed near Middlebury are the various RV parts surplus stores. Some are great, some not so. If you are looking for interior, exterior lights, plumbing fittings, cabinets, doors, small furniture even complete RV furniture interiors. I bought a lot of assorted screws and sealants.

Is there a preferred interior furniture place in the area? Got any names of places? When we get there we will be looking to replace our captains chairs and L-shaped sofa. The Villa furniture we have now is not to our liking - it is very uncomfortable...

There is an Amish furniture maker there that a bunch of people have had make replacement furniture for their "L" couches for example. I can't remember his name. Pat Bauer and Diesel Diva have new couches from him. We stopped by his showroom. We are considering the same thing. 2 recliners, either full flat or standard tilt. His shop is southeast of Middlebury and maybe 5-8 miles away from the plant. Look him up.

I googled it.. Lambright is the owners last name.

While staying at Shipshewanna South, a group (14) of us were picked up by Amish coaches and taken to a farm house for dinner. It was a great experience. (about $40 each). A friend made the arrangements but I'm sure you can "google" it.

Greg,

Try Lambright Comfort Chair. They are a few miles south of Shipshewana on the main road and watch for the signs for the turnoff to the East. We are getting our new powered reclining sofa in September.

If you go ask for Vernon.
