Best solution for a 40 mph crosswind noise is to pull over and wait for better weather. It is somewhat dangerous, and it'll likely knock your milage down to 3-4 mpg.

Agree that it's better to be off the road in that strong crosswind, but the wind was forecast for several days, and not a lot of havens to escape to when traveling North to South in central Utah. We were on highway 89 South from the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Strong winds were howling for several days in a row last week. Also, you're right on as to drop in fuel mileage!
