Rear Wheels Off the Ground

My concert driveway is angled away from our house (like most I am sure.

In order to level the coach I need to push the wheels off the ground.

Are there any issues doing this?

Yes there are issues with having the rear tires off of the ground. For one thing the vehicle's brakes are no longer holding the vehicle in place so the weight of the vehicle pushing downhill on the inclined driveway can bend the small diameter jacks. Another issue is that the wind can put a lot of lateral forces against the massive side of the MH and can bend the small diameter jacks since the tires arent holding the rear of the vehicle from swaying in the wind.

Very dangerous Curt. There is no parking brakes when the rear wheels are off the ground. Don't do it, Gnome is 100% correct.

If that is permanent parking, I would have some ramps built.

I back my MH in for the same reason . If I level, the front wheels are off the ground, but with the residential refrigerator, I rarely level in the driveway anymore.

Best not do that.....far better to build leveling ramps that support the coach.

I have to ask tho....why level it? Will you keep it in that spot or is it there temporarily for loading/unloading? If that's the case, a short downhill won't hurt it.

Block the front wheels securely. The jacks ADE designed to support the coach WITH the wheels off the ground. Only a problem if it bothers you, if it does, do not do it. Otherwise go for it.

can you turn the coach around to face the other direction?

found this warning in a winnebago manual

NOTE: When parking at an uneven site, always park the front of the motor home to the downhill side. This allows you to level by raising the front end rather than the rear. Since only the rear wheels are locked while in PARK, raising either one or both of the rear wheels off the ground could allow the vehicle to roll off the jacks.

Everything I have read and seems common sense the rears should stay on the ground. Front off the ground is ok. Even it were just the front if for extended amount of time such as parking at home I would suggest to have ramps rather than solely on the jacks.

Gene,

I will make sure the front wheels are securely blocked.

Having the back wheels off the ground in my driveway does not bother me -- it just seems to get other folks talking.

The only reason not to do it would be the lack of parking brakes if both sides of the axle were off the ground. On our DSDP the jacks are rated at 12,000#'s each and the total weight is 32,000 and the jacks will support 48,000#'s.

JACKS....Retail for 600 per leg plus installation, and that can take a couple hours on some of them easily (though I know how to do it faster, just not the factory approved method)

In short... not a good idea. And no, don't ask.

Chuck,

I am reading the manual off my cell phone so I may have missed something.

I could not find any place that says you must keep your rear tires on the ground at all times.

I see a rather vanilla statement that says keep "all the tires" on the ground -- don't know how reasonable all tires on the ground guidance really is.
