Secondary Fuel Filter Head

Just a heads up. While having our 2015 Anthem serviced, Oil, Filters and a few other filters, I noticed the secondary fuel filter leaking after the new Fleetguard filter was installed. The mechanic removed it and attempted to install it again but it continue to leak. A new filter was installed and it also leaked.

A new FUEL FILTER HEAD was ordered and installed.*
Another new fuel filter was installed on the new head without leaks.*

If I had not checked the filters before I drove off I would have had a large mess, not to mention the possibility of a fire.*
Just thought I would bring this to everyones attention as we all get in a hurry and over look things.
I have never heard of these heads becoming a problem. Cummins sent the Fuel Head and the shop installed it with a hundred dollar deductible. According to the shop Cummins has a hundred dollar deductible after 2 year warranty is up. I didn't know about this.*

Anyway makes for good advice to check these fuel filters daily before you hit the road.*

Thanks for the heads up. I did not realize the deductible kicked in that early either.

Jim, do you know where the casting failed?

I found one on EBay for $15.99, after shipping and a minumum shop rate, your deductible was probably a good move.

Are you a Cummins Power Club member? We joined years ago, and renewed it with the purchase of our Aspire. Being a CPC member saves a bit on prices.

Thank you for the heads up, and a good thing to monitor.

-Matt

I was under the impression that Cummins guarantee was three years, not 3 years. What logic were you given Jim?

As others have asked..... could you tell where the fixture was leaking.... a crack in the fixture or a bad seal?

The warranty is three years but there is a $100 deductible beginning the 3rd year.

Good heads up Jim.....also that filter has a plastic housing and subject to incorrect installation. Good thing to check after any filter change, good move on your part, thanks for sharing

I was wrong. Spartan is supposedly 3 years and Cummins is supposedly 5 years.

So is the NEW $100 deductible a new Spartan policy and why would it be retroactive to us classic owners. One would think that would apply to new owners.

It did not leak before the filter swap, but it leaked after.
Is it possible that the housing was damaged by a ham-fisted mechanic, or did it just fail coincident with the filter change?

Matt, we are not members but will certainly consider the Power Club membership. Thanks for the advice.*

Gary, I was told by the shop boss that it was a Cummins issue not Spartan and that he had filed a claim on our behalf. When he turned in the claim he was told by Cummins that there was $100 deductible. We paid the deductible and that was the total cost out the door.*

The shop boss explained to us that the fuel filters belong mounted on the motor and that Spartan moves them over to the bay in which they sit in.
We will turn in the payment to our extended warranty and see what they have to say about paying for it.*(Ya I know Good luck)

Bob, this particular filter I believe should be torqued to 28 foot lbs. There is a nut on the bottom of the filter used to torque it down. This filter is under pressure I am told. Maybe 70 psi or there abouts when fuel is flowing.*
As far as damage it was not the filters. The filter head had to have started to spread over time. The threads looked normal and filters screwed on nicely but leaked right through the little rubber seal. The mechanic thought the head had warped at the top thus allowing fuel past the seal and down thru the threads ultimately all over the back of our coach.

Hope this helps. I have always done a pretty good walk around and will stop making it routine. I always walk around at each stop we make and when we start off for the day. I usually leave that filter door locked but looks like I'll be having to key it and check from this point on.*

Jim, another member relocated his filters to the engine bay. I really like that idea from the service aspect. It would also help in your situation.

I closely looked at this when I last did filters and decided I would do the same once we were home and I felt good about opening things up in a clean environment.

I feel you could relocate the filter heads if the filters were dismounted, and a few tie wraps cut temporarily to be able to move some wire bundles.

Whomever first did this mod had a great idea. Thanks!

The $100 deductible is/was applied to my rig each time a visit was necessary at Cummins after the second year of service.
