You have a tank flush system built into the black tank to help clean out old toilet paper and solid fecal matter, and when you open the two valves and let the contents mix, you are moving some of that stuff into the gray water tank where there is no flush system?!? Doesn't make any sense to me. I want to keep toilet paper and fecal solids in one tank only (the black tank) which can be cleaned with the tank flush system, and the last thing I would want to do is junk up my gray tank with fecal matter and toilet paper.

Gary
You're right about mixing, but there is a reason some do it. BUT first you drain and rinse the black tank. I do it at least three times to be sure clear water is coming out. Then with the black tank empty I open both valves. I watch the black sensor and when it gets to about 11%, close it. The full gray tank pushes water into the empty back tank and generally that water has soap in it. It should make the sloshing action more effective as you go down the road.

Got this tip from Pat Bauer I think. If one is concerned about excess water use you can just drain the black tank, but I prefer to get it clean before I put the gray water in it.

Just me, but I stop at back flushing the black tank full until clear water comes out. I add about a 1/3 of a small bottle of Pinesol before a long day of traveling to scrub the tank. Every so often do the same to the gray tank.

I have used that Pinesol trick several times. Not sure if it helps clean the black tank or not, but I definitely see an improvement in the odor from the slinky when I finally disconnect it. Worth the small extra time and $$ just for that reason.

That is the main reason I use it. Knocks what little sludge that may be left loose and leaves the the first drain and flush "decent" smelling. Since I started the 100% back flush method, we only use chemicals when the temps are above 85 degrees and staying for longer than 3 days.

We use pinesol, a half bottle of cheap dollar a bottle dish soap and 2 caps of Calgon plus 25-50% full of fresh water. Drive a day to the next stop and drain both tanks and another black tank flush. Keeps it smelling nice(grey tank can smell worse than black imho) and soap keeps valves lubed. Don't know that it all is necessary but it works for us and we normally do not use any chemicals. JMHO
