Shade Motor Replacement

I think I finally had one fail. How did you replace? Did you remove the valance for better access?

Depends on which one. The toll and door shades are very difficult. You can't easily remove the "valence" wood. Techs I have used use a long extension on an "electric driver" to reach the screws. Believe they have square head slots. Windshield and side windows are much easier. My techs remove the valence to replace. Programming stop points is more complicated than it used to be. Get detailed directions from Middlebury if you are going to do the job yourself.

For the toll window no need to remove the valance. You will need a long (at least 6") extension to get at all 6 screws. Take the entire unit (day and night shade) down to replace the shade. Best to replace both at once if they are yellow motors.

I think it was Don's idea to make a sling between the cabinet door handles and set the shade motors in there while changing the wires, etc. Great idea, I changed the one motor by myself with no problem.

Chuck,

I cannot take credit for that one, it wasn't me. I end up using the seat back or build up a platform, or enlist the DW's help.

Oh well, where ever credit is due it was a great idea. I used nylon cord from the side cabinet handle to the front cabinet handle and laid the shade assemble in it.

I picked up a 4 inch phillps bits at, of all places the Shipshewana Flea Market, for a buck a piece. I used that with my 3 inch magnetic extension. Good thing I bought one, I lost a shade motor in Nebraska.

I almost forget how to replace them as it has been several months since the last one failed. Should be no problem now that I have 95% red motors.

CS Entry Shade motor replacement

So here we are again with shade motor failure. Had several failure of yellow shade motors replaced by either dealer or third party. Entry NS motor failed followed by Entry DS. Called CS to have replacement sent and they arrived yesterday with no instructions. Sent email to CS and they sent me two documents, one to program the new Red motor and the other how to reprogram the yellow motor and program the Red motor. Neither addressed my question. Well, it is after 4:30 EST and here I am again hanging out in the middle of something and CS goes home for the weekend.

My question is, the yellow motor has two white wires, one with blue writing and the other without. The red motor has five wires, one white with blue dashes, another white with writing, a brown wire, and two gray wires with the programming switch. I have determined which coach wires control up and down on the night shade and the day shade, but the brown wire remains a mystery. My guess is that it is a ground wire for the motor, but I am not sure of that. It is likely since somewhere in the switches for the individual shade motors is a ground because the switches do nothing more than switch which side the 12VDC shade motors current is applied to which determines whether the shade turns clockwise or counterclockwise and the shade goes up or down correctly.

The absence of a ground wire on the motor may be the primary reason for the regular failure of the yellow motors since they have no such wire. I suspect that the Red motor will work with or without the brown wire, but it would be nice to know if it is a ground wire and if so, where are they connecting it.

I have read many reports of the the replacement of yellow shade motors with red, but I have not seen anything about the brown wire on the Red motors.

Does anyone know how the wires on the Red motors are connected?

Only cut off the brown wire. At least for our 2014 Anthem that was the instructions from Bryan and PJ. The remaining two wires splice in to the existing wires cut from the bad motor. One to two hours for first time removal and installation.

I've already replaced all 4 front night shades. I had the passenger front day shade replaced at Summerfest. Since then we lost 4 more night shades. I had Pam call CS as we were on our way home and they are sending us 8 new shade motors. Should they be replaced in pairs? I believe I read that somewhere.

If replacing yellow motors, Entegra is advising to replace both at the same time.
