Cool Slide Issue

Yesterday, when I put out the large living room slide, one side lagged behind the other to the point I had to stop, bring it back in and try to put it out again. It finally did go out, but was not square. The motor is definitely running, but the rear portion is not wanting to move.

Any thoughts on what to check appreciated !!

It sounds like a shear pin broke. Other owners on here can give you instructions on how to replace a shear pin if that's the problem.

As Bill mentioned. Check motor for tightness, also shear pins.

Cool

Damn! You guys are good!

Got under there and the shear pin had fallen out; cotter pin broken. So, pin is back in and going to the hardware store to get a cotter pin and I'm back in business!

Thanks for your quick replies!

While at the hardware store it is worth carrying an extra shear pin or 2 along with cotter pins. Here are the specs. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/slid...ml#post2222920

Check the motor for being tight making sure there is no binding to cause the cotter key to break. Glad it was an easy fix. Those are a couple of spare parts the are good to have on hand. I keep mine taped to the motor in the bedroom as they are easy to misplace.

That's a good tip.....Fortunately, I only have a few more months with this coach.... Time for something little newer.

The same shear pins have been used since my 02 Travel Supreme. I just transferred the last set to my 19.

Glad you found it quickly. Those "broken" cotter pins causing the shear pin to fall out are not uncommon. Had one on my bed slide and have talked to a few other owners that had the same issue.

Yeah, someone told be to just get a 5/16" both and locknut to replace the pin....I didn't do that this time, but it sounds like a good idea...

There are two schools of thought on that.
If something would bind, shear pins are designed to shear before the motor or linkage is damaged.
Bolts are designed to hold. If something were to bind, what would break first?

What exactly is that Shear pin , is there a part number or correct hardness that is required and also are they available locally or do they have to come from the factory. I want to get a couple and want to make sure I have the correct ones....Alan

See the link in post 5 that gives the specs with photos also read some of the other posts. The shear pins connects the shafts to the slide motors.

There was a long drawn out post a while back on hardness, not being an engineer, I took the photo on my phone and asked the guy at Ace Hardware which pin would "shear" in this type of use. Walked out with what looks to be the factory type pins. I know they are softer than bolts, have been carrying spares for years. I had one break years ago on the Travel Supreme because a roll of toilet paper got jammed under the bed. Made me a believer on having spares, a minute fix and the slide was back in.
