We just lost the shear pin on our living room slide out front side. The rear slide worked fine but would start to bind because the front shear was done. Thankfully the only damage we had was to the shear pin. We have a trip planned to Entegra in July to get the once over and get everything tip top again. The slide out mechanisms need some attention on our 12 model.

Not only is my pin not loose, I had to drill it out completely.
Even after that - the cog is firmly wedged/seized onto the shaft and won't budge. I'm letting it sit overnight with some penetrating oil to see if I can coax it off.

Spoke with Entegra CS, parts on the way.

They could have JB welded it or they may have tack welded.

I drilled out the 1/4 in. retaining pin completely - even re-drilled it to 5/16 in.

haaa love it maybe wrap some duct tape so you don't put to big of a new shear pin in, So you don't well pooch anything because its too thick. So I take it you ground off the old one close enough to drill on the beast.

Didn't have to - The old pin was recessed on both ends. If I got the shaft out to a vise or a press I could remove the cog lickity split. Or use my friend Mr. Sledge.

Sounds like it's time for the blue-tipped wrench. Can you heat the cog wheel with a propane (or other) torch to get it to expand to break loose? Perfect use for one of those little butane torches harbor freight sells!

Excellent post and thanks for taking the time to pic and document for future info. This is the type of failure that always makes me apprehensive when it comes time to push the slide retract button!!

And don't forget the Aero Kroil penetrant.

I am working this week at my "real" job, so I can't play RV technician.

Next week I plan to reexamine the situation weather permitting. The replacement parts from Entegra arrived. I plan to unload slide rack off of the cog by jacking it up slightly, then removing the retaining washers and bearing on the left. The right sided bearing will prove difficult because it abuts the wall & frame of the compartment and there's no easy way to chisel off the retaining washers.

Bob, do keep us informed of the progress. Can you post a photo of the new part when you have time? Were you able to drive the coach back to your work location?

I'll snap some pix when I get home. Yes, the slide moves fairly easily without binding. For retraction, I use the remote and push at the same time. All the same, I am minimizing the use of the slide until repairs completed.

Bob, are you securing the slide in some way when traveling? We used 2x4s wedged under and above the bed when our motor brake failed.

No, I haven't. I'm not travelling very far (57 miles with no hard turns) and the front passenger side has two cog-driven rams to secure it - one of which is still intact.

Success!

New Parts from Entegra + Good weather + Time

I had to finally us a die grinder to remove one of the bearing retaining washers and used a dremel to cut the shaft as the cog was seized to the shaft and the shaft was seized to the bearing.

It is a tight compartment and, I have old-guy vision, which means I had to take out my contact lenses to see up close. Then it was hard to find my tools because I CSS. I unloaded the front of the slide with a ladder and bottle jack.
