Slide Topper Repair

While cleaning the roof today I noticed the leading edge of my DS front slide topper is starting to wear and separate.

I live in windy west Texas with wind that is cruel and abusive to awnings so I'm not surprised. I had similar (worse) wear on my Newmar slide topper.

I thought I'd try and repair the stitching. Maybe a little duct tape for the edge. Unless anyone has a better idea.

We've got a tear in the inboard center of our front drivers side slide, right where the topper meets the metal shield. We've been watching the RVGeeks on YouTube and have decided to try to replace the topper fabric ourselves. I just don't believe any repair will last long on ours.
Good luck!

Slide Topper Repair

My toppers were almost 6 years old when the effects of contant sun and wind took their toll. 6 years!
They were still very functional, but we didn't trust them to go much longer.
I checked around. I looked at all the stuff. I saw plastic/fabric stuff, like the OPs pic, starting to fray as early as a year. It's a sign of quick demise!
So, I replaced them with the same fabric: Double Woven Linen. It is top dollar and worth it!
I'll do it again in another 6 years or so.

Bob, they are under warranty, let Entegra send you new ones. Hopefully the new ones might be stronger.

Really? I'm not sure the torrential wind here constitutes fair wear-and-tear. Would be nice if that were so, but I wonder if going the route that Dave suggested with a higher quality fabric might be a better idea, though more $$.

Dave - where did you get yours?

Thanks, Bob!
The originals were special ordered by the 1st owner. I did my research and got mine from Shade Pro.

I've done it on two different rigs. Used Tough Top for the Dutch Star and a friend used Stone Vos for his Monaco.
I've got one that I might have to replace soon. Our toppers are Girard and Tough Top doesn't do those but Stone Vos does.
Funny thing about it is that Tough Tops are made right here in Vancouver WA and Stone Vos is clear across the country in FL!

I didn't know the warranty excluded W. TX

I replaced my previous factory awnings with Sunbrella from Carefree awning. I bought them from an RV parts house in Dallas.

On our last coach we had the same problem. Wasn't going to replace the awning since we knew we were getting rid of the MH. So, I took a piece of Eternabond tape that I had and folded it over the seam that was coming apart. This lasted two years and was still going strong when we sold the MH.

Double woven linen does not unravel or split. It tatters a bit but holds together. It is thinner than any poly whatever.
It is the fabric of depression era flour sacks.
I have a Shade Pro hat, bit they don't kick me back nuthin.

Chris Throgmorton (RV Awnings & Slide Toppers From Stone Vos) is a great guy and does great work.

When the slide is out, the wind will cause the topper to flop up and hit the cover edge. Over time it will cut thru the fabric. I recommend opening the covers and installing (on each end of the slide toppers) a strip (approx 12") of adhesive auto door edging to the edge that comes in contact with the awning at each end. The rounded edge of the door guard will help eliminate this cutting action.

That sounds like a terrific suggestion. The picture I attached really didn't show it, but all along the topper you can see where that edge is contacting and digging in to the fabric - hastening its demise.
