Soft Ice Cream

On a lighter and non critical note:

We like to have our ice cream cold and hard -- not so much cool and sloppy soft.

I learned a new factoid about our GE residential fridge yesterday.

Apparently in order for the freezer to operate correctly and get cold enough for the ice cream to be hard, you must not fill the freezer to capacity.

CS told me that 25% of the freezer capacity must remain open.

I did not seem to have that issue with the similar type freezer in our S&B house.

Anyone care to share your experience with coach freezer capacity?

Also please share your favorite flavor of Ice Cream too.

That's wierd. I have always heard that a freezer cools best when it is full.

Generally speaking--newer [frost-free] fridges depend on a modest amount of air flow to cool the contents. Blocking the intake/output vents to the coils traps the cold air being generated by the coils and allows areas of the fridge to warm more than others. Not sure if 25% empty is the right number but keeping the vents open and air flowing is probably more critical.

I have the Samsung RF197 with a freezer drawer. The drawer has two baskets, one large deep one on the bottom and a smaller shallow one on the top which the left half is for ice cubes only.

The drawer is always full and there is no way to block the airflow for the freezer.

The temp in the freezer is consistently -9F - 0F.

The only time the temp drops to a much lower level is when making ice cubes. Then the freezer temp will be anywhere from -18F - -12F until I turn the ice maker off.

I only make enough ice to fill the cube bin half full. That way the ice doesn't get old before it gets used plus it allows for some extra storage space.

Sorry, I forgot to post my favorite flavor. Baskins & Robbins Cherries Jublilee. Breyers Butter Pecan.

Chocolate, Vanilla, Rocky Road, Strawberry

Fridge is pretty much full but have noticed when it gets packed there are variations in the cold.

We are sitting in Shipshewana reading owners manuals and one of the quick start guides also said that overloading the freezer will cause frost to accumulate and poor temperature control. Good heads up Curt, thanks.

Do you pull this behind the Entegra? Where is your next trip to?

What an awesome piece of fabrication. Well done.

Moose Tracks. I microwave my ice cream for 9 seconds. Just the opposite of hard.

My Samsung freezer in my 2014 Anthem DEQ is so packed that I can't get another thing in there. I even bought a bag of Salmon filets from Costco that are individually wrapped and had to take them out of bag to squeeze them in between other items!! HAHA. After reading this thread I checked the temp on the door and it said -2, exactly where I programmed it.

Freezers do need air flow but most are designed to allow that without packing worries. We pack our 21 cu ft Amana solid many times but the diffusers on the back still allow airflow.

Favorite brands - homemade, then Bluebell (Texas), then Hudsonville (available in Middlebury, IN and surrounding area).

Favorite flavors, Mostly vanilla, then chocolate covered cherry Bluebell specialty - got a get it in Texas), then Huckleberry (Willcoxson's - gotta get it at the factory in Billings, MT).
