Spark Arrestor

Those who do there own generator maintenance do you notice much in the spark arrestor. Also how often do you check it.

I don't have enough hours on the Entegra yet, but did get a fair amount out of my previous MH. I am not sure of the hours required, I would have to look it up. I know it was when I changed the air filter.

I have done it on previous Onan generators every couple of years and never gotten much soot. It is supposed to be done every 250 hours OR once per year. I did not do it last year but will do it this year as I am approaching 500 hours.

Section 3-5 of the manual gives the details - you need to remove the top of the generator cover.

On my last coach I waited one year and checked the clean-out plug but nothing came out. I then waited three years and hardly anything came out. I checked it at 8 years before I sold it and again, not much of anything. That was at a bit over 400 hours on the generator. I'm thinking that you probably won't really need to do that until at least 500 hours, and maybe more often once the generator gets more tired and has more hours on it. But, it's not a big thing and doesn't cost you anything so it sure won't hurt to do it more frequently. The first time is the hardest because every filter or fastener on an Onan is installed by some ape named Mongo at the factory who likes to make things real tight.

Helps to use anti-seize when reinstalling.
