Steer options other than Michelin

Hello group.

I am shopping steer tires in part due to the damage caused by our drive axle issues.

One of the things that I need to do is replace the RF Steer tire at the very least. If so, I would replace with another G670 315/80R22.5 LRL.

Obviously, due to the reputation Goodyear has on our coaches, I’m looking at other options.

Clearly, the gold standard is Michelin XZA2 or XLEZ tires. We’ve had Michelin’s on our last coach and they were good, without a doubt. Sidewalk cracking and price are the only apparent negatives.

I find it difficult to believe that there is only one solution. In this case, I’m less concerned about the price differences, than in the overall quality and value.

Thus, I’ve been researching brands other than Michelin and wish to solicit your input.

Does anyone have firsthand experience running Hankook or Continental tires on a large coach?

I can get any of the top 3 choices (Michelin, Hankook, or Continental) for very similar prices. The decision comes down to a simple choice.

Thanks for your time,

-Matt

Bill in FL used the FMCA program and installed Continentals. He said he likes them better than the Michelins he took off.

I just installed 8 new Michelins to replace the OEM Michelins that gave me 7 years of great service. No cracking or failures, and a great ride. I wouldn’t mess around with anything else.

Chuck thank you.

Marc, thanks but I’m pretty clear on the opinions regarding Michelin tires.

I’m hoping to broaden the response.

Thanks,

-Matt

Matt,

I've not had personal experience, but I've spoken with a few users and have read many positive comments about Toyos.

Here's a link for the tire recommended for motorhomes (M144): https://www.toyotires.com/commercial...-position-tire Thanks,

BG

Due to their reputation, I replaced all 8 Goodyears G670’s 2 years ago with Toyos all the way around. M144 up front and M177 out back. It has only been 2 years and about 10,000 miles but I have no complaints.

M144 seems to be a good tire for bus service

Matt:

I ran Toyo tires on my old Monaco Dynasty coach. They ran fine. They were less expensive and I felt the ride was excellent. Now, on the 2 Entegras, when I needed a tire or two on my 15, I stayed with Michelin.

On another motorhome, I had great results with both Toyo and Sumitomo tires.

Not sure if they make a Bridgestone in the size you need but Bridgestone used to make an excellent tire I would say comparable to Michelin , not sure how they are now.

In conclusion, the pull of Michelin won out.

Yesterday I had a pair of X Line Energy Z 315s installed for a tad under $1900.

(2) XLEZ 315 80R22.5 $824 ea. $1648
(2) Mount and Bal. $60 ea. $120
(2) Valve Stems $7 ea. $14
(2) F.E.T. $52.84 ea. $105.68
Subtotal: $1887.68
+ local sales taxes.

A local shop did the work and volunteered to beat the FMCA price. While they beat it by the price of a decent lunch, I think that gives them credit for the sale.

Overall exceptional service and very attentive.

I spoke with Kirt Garrison to arrange the purchase, and Mike (Lazzy - NOT lazy) did the install.

The outfit is:

Tire and Wheel Connection
14431 FM 2920
Tomball TX 77375
United States
(281) 351-8473

Tire and Wheel Connection is a Goodyear and Michelin dealer. I think they also are Toyo and Hankook dealers.

As an aside, I asked for the one remaining original Goodyear tire to be spun on the balancer to try and understand why I’m having unusual wear. It would have taken 10 Oz. Of weight according to the balancer. There were zero weights on this wheel, and careful examination revealed no evidence of any weights ever having been installed.

In my opinion, this tire came from the factory unbalanced, and slowly ate itself to death.

Interestingly enough, the other newer tire that replaced one of the two steer tires had an absolute ton of weight installed by a different local Goodyear shop. It had 17 Oz. Of stick on weights installed just inside the outside edge of the wheel. It had another 2 Oz. hammered onto the inside lip of the wheel. 19 Oz. in total.

Watching the Goodyear spin on the balancer, it was obviously not a very true tire, and somewhat out of round.

The Michelin’s spun almost perfectly. Very true and almost perfectly round. One tire took 5 Oz. and the other took 9 Oz.

The first short low speed drive home was very quiet and smooth.

Next week off to the front end shop to replace the bushings in the rear, Track the rear, and align the front.

Glad to hear everything is coming together.

So, does this mean your keeping the coach?

Not if I get a buyer.

I couldn’t sell something with a known deficiency, especially something like this.

I’m going with urethane bushings in the rear and hopefully that will prevent a reoccurrence.

Frankly, I’m less confident the rear suspension had anything to do with this. I feel it’s more likely the tires were exceptionally unbalanced from day one.

I know for a fact that one of the original steer tires was never balanced, and was 10 Oz. out.

According to Spartan and Rayco, not their problem. Less than completely satisfied with Spartan.

Once you start putting weights on the wheels, you have to rebalance them every so often. I went with this; www.centramatic.com. I noticed the difference right away (only did the front). They are in Alvarado, TX, on the side road, about to be swallowed up by MHSRV. You get a 10% FMCA discount and free mounting.
