Step Cover Won't lock in place after pulling manual release strap

I was working to help stop the step cover rattling on my 2016 Cornerstone and I pulled the manual release strap under the cover so that I could slide the cover back and forth. This worked and cover now slides partially in and out without having to use the motor. My problem is that now I cannot get the cover to lock back down on the slide track? According to something I read on a forum, all you have to do is run the motor back in and it will automatically lock the slide cover back to the track. Well that did not work.
I have tried everything to get it locked again but no success.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Don

How did you address the rattle. This thread was from some time ago

See TurboDave's post #19. Worked excellent for me.

But not sure of the answer to your specific operational issue....

It is likely a latch adjustment but the latch also might need to be replaced. The latch has a small amount of play where it’s bolted to the x-member. Loosen the 2 nuts (shown in RED) that hold the latch in and try to rotate/pull it forward then retighten. The drive mechanism might be bottoming out on the rear x-member before it can fully latch. This will move the latch forward allowing it to fully engage. If it looks like it’s fully latching but still is popping out after several uses, the latch might need to be replaced.

Look for bent metal by the pin. Straighten and all will be good.

All: thanks for all your help.
I was able to get the step cover to latch but
in order to see what was wrong, I had to remove the
carpet and wooden cover. Seems that as the step droops
down when extended, this kicks up the back end of the drive track
and when this drive track is retracted, it hits on the housing
where the latch is contained rather than allowing the latch pin
to slide into the latch. I had to use a wedge and crowbar
to pry up the latch assembly so that the drive track would slide
under this latch assembly and then the latch pin went into the
latch and closed. There is virtually no clearance for the drive track
to slide under the latch housing, so would expect this to happen
to many coaches as the step cover droops down over time.
