Towing 8K lbs

Went out on our first adventure towing our new 22ft car hauler. Between the trailer and the Isuzu Trooper we carried we figure it was around 8K. We went over some 8 and 9 percent grades and she slowed us down pretty slow going up those hills. I've never towed something that heavy and was a little disappointed at 40 mph or so up grade. The going down was easy. We normally leave the aux brake on low, but finally found a need for high. It works fantastic.

I found the same with our 450 HP Anthem. Solution=Cornerstone or live with it. You are still going to pass most semis.

Having lived in CO for 20 years...a MH towing anything up the passes at 40 MPH is very respectable.

9% grade and 40mph? That's good.

As someone else said, get used to the slower climb, and I would guess in 4th or 3rd, or you are going to be forced up to the 600. The salesmen who sold me my rig, and others that I looked at were pretty consistent, if I was going to pull a trailer and heavy car/truck that I should go the 600. Since all I anticipated was pulling my 3,500 pound Honda (or something equivalent), I decided that 450 was all I needed. Did you find you had to manually downshift as you climbed to keep the engine heat in good shape, or was the Allison capable of doing that all by itself?

I just kept my foot on the gas and the engine pulled it just fine. The temp would go up a bit but not too hot. Going down the other side it would cool off a bit.

Some steep hills between Franklin and Murphy, NC!

I guess I would compare it to the older coaches with 300-400HP engines and less torque. They are likely taking those same hills at less than 30. That said, the 600HP and torque of the ISX engine in the Cornerstone is a dream in the mountains. I was pulling close to 7k #s with pickup, golf cart, etc. I saw the same as you indicate with Anthem, and much better performance with Cornerstone. I wasn't unhappy with Anthem and its pulling capacity.

I find, with the bigger motor, I don't go any much faster. I mainly go the same speed with less effort and less need for "energy management". My previous MH, at 34,000 lbs with a 350 HP Cummins ISB was a struggle up those Rocky Mountains. I was down to 25 mph in 3rd gear plenty.

This summer we left Jackson Wy going West on Wy22 through the Teton Pass. 10% grades with tight switchbacks so you can't build speed going down hill to help going up. Got down to 25mph at one point but mostly 30 - 35 which seems really slow until you pass a truck doing 5. Feels pretty good to blow by a truck at 30.

We pull a 24' enclosed trailer with a Harley in the V-nose and a Mini Cooper in the back, about 8,000 lbs. We have not pulled with our new Anthem yet and are looking forward to our first trip in May. I'm happy you posted this I have been curious how she would perform. Our previous MH a Seneca with 300HP and banks system would pull most of the Rocky Mountains and not drop below 45, however the engine was racing and working hard.

Different brand of coach, but the same 450 cummins. We pull a 12,000# enclosed trailer and with a gross weight of 51,000#, we do just fine on I-70 west of Denver. We get down to about 38 mph, but it's of little concern as the scenery is better at that speed. The longer the trip takes, the more we enjoy it.

Sometimes it's better to adapt to a "I'm retired" perspective, though the 600/K-3 is verrrrrrrry seductive.

I really don't need to spend another $170k on an upgrade!
