Transmission economy mode
i posted this on an old thread, but decided it needed a new thread of it's own.
i have questioned the operation of the transmission in the economy mode for the last two years. I got a non answer last year, but ask for a better answer this year from Spartan engineering.
What I found is that "most", I suspect all, of the Allison transmission economy modes were not programmed by Spartan.
Spartan sent the proper program to Allison to program mine and it made a Hugh difference in the operation. The transmission up shifts sooner and uses the torque of the engine to climb hills instead of shifting out of 6th gear on most hills. Mine rarely shifts out of 6th gear now, only on the longest steepest hills when the rpm of the engine falls to 1400 rpm.
I hesitate to post this, but it makes such a difference I think everyone needs to know. How or why Spartan missed this I have no idea. What you do or don't do is up to you.
If anyone is interested the CIN number for the program is: 4F017UU. Noel

Noel, thank you! I am meeting with Spartan reps tomorrow on another issue and with my MH only getting 5.99 MPG this is definitely going to be asked. Thank you for this post, for me it is very beneficial.

Good to have information. Had the ECON mode on our previous MH and never really saw an advantage to it. This may have explained it. Thanks.

I hesitate to say this, because I don't know it to be true, but I used the economy mode the last 1000 miles religiously...I think my CS has had that programming, because in the rolling hills and grades, I rarely downshifted; meaning the engine torque pulled the hills staying in 66 at a cruise control setting of 65-70 mph (note, I'm not talking the Rockies). I guess if the true rating is 1950 at 1200 rpm (for the CS), not downshifting would seem to make sense. The only thing I didn't see was a notable increase in mileage, but then, engine has less than 5000; while it has improved about 0.5 mpg, this has not been in the mountains. I was just at Spartan, but I may call them back and ask the question for the CS anyway (or ask the Spartan techs at Middlebury next week). Thanks, Noel for the info.

You just have a serious lead-foot, or maybe that diesel afterburner you installed. My 44,000 lb whale gets 7.3 mpg.

Cruise set at 67 MPH, flat ground FL. Same setting, same route with the TS with a 350 7.3 MPG. The Entegra with several hundred pounds that did not go back into the Entegra 5.99 MPG.. It has me scratching my head as well.
Coming home from Entegra, taking it easy and listening to the new coach...6.3 MPG. So far not impressed with my milage. I can't run over 70 as the rear end whines, so I have had to take it easy. New rear end being installed tomorrow so we will see what happens after that.

That explains things. On our previous coach engaging the economy mode made a huge difference in the performance curve of the drive train. I've puzzled over the Entegra as I have experimented with the econo mode on/off, and have detected 0% difference. Huh, thought it was just me!

Ernie, it's definitely not you.
Dave, I don't know that this applies to the CS with the Allison 4000, but I also don't know that it doesn't. It won't do any good to ask Entegra techs or the Spartan techs at Entegra they don't know about this. Talk to Scott Wixson at Spartan. Noel

Noel, where did you take your coach to get the tranny reprogramed? Thanks.

Noel, thanks for posting this. I read the Allison manual, and assumed it was programmed at the factory. Experimenting with it has shown that it was not actually programmed as there is no difference in operation with or without ECON engaged.
Tell us the rest of the story....who programmed it and can it be done other places, like Josam's?

Dave and Pat, any Allison place can do it, of course Spartan can also. I stopped at Allison in Fort Wayne. Spartan first said the TCM would have to be replaced, but after talking to Allison they said it was just a TCM reprogram.
Anyplace that has a lap top and is capable of hooking up to the TCM should be able to program it given the previous CIN parameters from Spartan. Noel
