Couple of iPhone apps to look at:

Hearplanet: Will give you a brief summary of the history & features of locations near you

Skyview: point your phone at the night sky & it will show you the names of the stars & planets you see

Google Sky Map is the Android equivalent.

I haven't tried any of them yet but am in the process of downloading and trying each. Don't know if they are available in the Apple store.

Be careful with some of those. I noticed the 4 that claim to "boost" your signal are no longer reachable in the Play Store. One of the reasons an app can get removed from the Play Store is if it contains malware. If you did install any of those and you don't have a virus/malware scanner you might want to get one and run a scan.

The other apps that give you detailed info about your cell towers or wifi signals are probably fine and appear to be useful tools to help you maximize the signals you have available.

But those apps claiming to boost your power or reception are probably "placebo" or "prank" apps - or worse. One even had this statement in the description "...the app can give your phone signal even in dead zones, areas where there are no network signals". Yeah, sure. Nuthin' boosted is still nuthin'.

On the other hand I read somewhere that resetting your phone's radio can make it briefly more responsive by forcing it to rescan for the best tower signals. You can do this manually by switching in and out of "Airplane mode", so maybe there is an app that will do this behind the scenes. Then again, wouldn't your phone/carrier do that anyway?

Not saying it can't be, just saying be careful...

Rob and Linda,
Thank you for the heads up! I have Lookout installed on my device and am trusting that to scan for malware before installing any new apps, and it appears that all is well, although I must admit that most of the apps didn't impress me very much. I do appreciate your input.
Flora

P. S. I sent you a PM
