The other apps that give you detailed info about your cell towers or wifi signals are probably fine and appear to be useful tools to help you maximize the signals you have available.
But those apps claiming to boost your power or reception are probably "placebo" or "prank" apps - or worse. One even had this statement in the description
"...the app can give your phone signal even in dead zones, areas where there are no network signals". Yeah, sure. Nuthin' boosted is still nuthin'.
On the other hand I read somewhere that resetting your phone's radio can make it briefly more responsive by forcing it to rescan for the best tower signals. You can do this manually by switching in and out of "Airplane mode", so maybe there is an app that will do this behind the scenes. Then again, wouldn't your phone/carrier do that anyway?
