Traveling from Chicago to Phoenix
In early April I will be traveling from Aurora, near Chicago, to Phoenix Az. I will be stopping in Cape Girardeau to visit family. So I am very familiar with the road to Cape but have not travelled very far west of the Mississippi. I like to travel 300-400 miles per day so I expect to make about 3 overnight stops. Are there any roads or areas I should avoid or are there areas or roads that are the best. My wife passed away recently so I will traveling alone and would consider a passenger if anyone would be interested.
Thanks
Ray

As an additional reference when traveling, we use the Rand McNally Big Rig Atlas. Do you plan on exploring or driving direct?
We've taken I70 through Denver, dropped southwest to Leadville, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon then down to Phoenix.
So sorry to hear of your wife's passing.

That time of year, the Rockies can get unpredictable. So take the southern route as you're planning. It a nice trip that I've been on a few times. Take the back way into Phoenix and save a few hours.
safe travels

the rockies are no joke.. not that your coach won't do well its just miles of up and down and april it could still be pretty cold in that elevation .. I would drop down into texas to the 40 and the 10 thats even lower and that rolls really close to phoenix..

I also suggest the southern (I10) route that time of year. I40 around Albuquerque can be a problem and Flafstaff can be very troublesome in April. We made the trip to Phoenix twice last year, once across I10 and once across I40. Of course, in April you can look at weather along the I40 route and determine it's fine; there's no way to know until the time comes.
To plan this far out a good route for you is I55 to I40 to I30 to I20 to I10. I10 will take you all the way to the middle of Phoenix.

I will be attending a convention so driving directly there, but may explore on the way back.

We did much of this in 2016 going to Big Bend then to Albuquerque. (the CO/AZ trip was May 2014). There is a reason some areas of the country are called "fly overs"!

Ray, my main concern for you would be Phoenix area itself. I would avoid the main Phoenix area if possible. If you would give the address or location of your conference it would help those who know the Phoenix area well and I believe you will get some excellent suggestions on your approach directions. Phoenix is big and can be busy. A lot of people and a lot of major events. Driving thru it can be a Memorable event. I only mean to be aware and not to alarm you.
PS, If your from the Chicago area you'll feel right at home there during rush hour traffic.

I agree, but Chicago traffic I think is worst. Phoenix has better traffic flow and better roads. Everything seems to run fast

Phoenix is big and very spread out. The 101 is a wide Interstate-like road that goes all the way around Phoenix. It’s the best way to get from the east side to the west side, although it is a long way.
The 101, 202, 303, 51 and 60 are all like wide, fast Interstates, just not labeled as such.
I agree, Phoenix is easier to get around than Chicago, where I grew up and still visit twice a year.
Good luck with your trip.

Once you get to the Cape I'd go down to Sikeston take US60 to Springfield, all four lane, then take I-44 to Oklahom City then I-35 to Dallas then I-20 to I-10 to Phoenix. Most direct route and no mountains.
Alternatively, from Oklahoma City you could take I-40 over to Amarillo Tx then down to Clovis NM then take US70 diagonal across NM to I-10 at Las Cruces, and avoid El Paso Tx.

This is the shortest route from Cape G to Phoenix. What part of Phoenix are you going to?
