Walmart Quality

We had a Rubbermaid factory in our town for many years. They made all the agricultural and garden stuff. Water tanks, garden sheds, wheelbarrows, yard carts, etc. Walmart contacts Rubbermaid, and says we want to sell your products, send us one of each.

They send them samples of each, with pricing. Two months later, Walmart tells Rubbermaid how much they will pay for them, considerably less of course. Rubbermaid just produces a product that looks like the one they sent, but it had less resin, cheaper hardware, a very inferior product, but it looked the same.

Walmart sold the heck out of it, and Rubbermaid was happy. Who lost out? Rubbermaid continued to make two product lines, their original, heavy duty one, and the "lighter" one for Walmart. Same thing happens with every other product they sell, if you know what to look for, and are willing to look, as a consumer it is your choice to spend less, and get less.\

Of course, DEF is DEF and tires are tires, oil is oil, and so on and so on. There is always a reason something is cheaper. The reason, it is cheaper....

Mike, the thing is Walmart DEF is not any cheaper, in fact it is more expensive than DEF at truck stop pumps. DEF is EPA regulated and has to meet govt standards which the engine manufacture comply with. Walmart DEF is strictly convenience of getting DEF into a 45 foot MH that the fill is on the wrong side of the MH to use truck stop pumps. If people want to spend $12. at NAPA because they don't like Walmart, that's fine, but it does not change the formula of DEF that is govt regulated. Also my MH does not fit in NAPA parking lots.

In previous posts, nay sayers were saying Walmart DEF was exchanged with jugs filled with water. Others said they could not smell the uretha...I just did a test for the doubting people on how they can easily test any jug or brand of DEF if they want.

My 5 year warranty engine manufacture does not specify any brand or price of DEF. However they are very strict on the type and brand of coolant that is used along with grade of oil and the specs it has to meet.

I think I have finally found a 100% method to put the Walmart DEF urban legend to bed. BTW, I did shake some of the empty DEF on to some cardboard. The cardboard absorbed the water and the white residue did show up a little faster than on the ground. But, to slow of a test for me.
Chuck, I kinda object to this characterization of "urban legend", as I first brought this up in this forum. To the best of my knowledge and to be clear, the Walmart brand DEF has never to my knowledge been found to be water. Blue DEF sold at Walmart has...I tasted it, with no or a lifted seal twice...and it was water...READ BLUE DEF. Personal experience.

Now that said, I think it prudent, if the seal is broken, regardless of brand, taste it or don't buy it. JMHO

When we were in Elkhart for Springfest the wife picked up two boxes of Blue DEF at Walmart. Both boxes were sealed up and didn't look tampered with. When I opened the first one there was no spout and the seal was missing, I did the tests and it was water. The other box was fine. It does happen.

The test mentioned was on the lower priced Walmart DEF, not the higher price boxed Peak. Walmart $7.88 Peak, 11.97. If someone was going to return DEF more than likely the higher price DEF.

Anyhow, pump it, buy it jugged, test it, don't test it, purchased the higher price DEF, purchase an $85 tester...it makes no difference to me. Two out of three of the jugs I could not smell uretha until they were empty and that was the whole purpose of the post. I am not saying it doesn't happen and why i made the post, but "I" believe that a few of the posts that "also" return DEF only smelled it and that doesn't always work. At least not on the cheap Walmart DEF that I purchased.

I don't buy DEF from Walmart. But I do buy motor oil from Walmart. I've never bought old motor oil in a new jug from Walmart. My point is that if someone was to try cheating Walmart it would be by returning old oil because it is more expensive then DEF.

Also, with so many people here thinking they got water that would mean two things:
1. There is a lot of people all around the country trying to beat Walmart for $8 or $12.

2. Not many people who bought water complained to Walmart about it and Walmart isn't doing anything about it.

My gut tells me that this DEF/Water issue is urban legend.

One step further, check it in the store, bad seal, leave it on the shelf. I removed the cap and checked the seals on the 3 jugs I purchased. That is harder to do on the boxed Peak Blue DEF as they are taped shut.

I always check it on the shelf the when adding it I have always been able to smell the scent every time I have opened it if I don't smell the smell I will not use it. However have always smelled the bad odor.

Big difference between used motor oil and new motor oil, in terms of colour that is why no would think of switching. On the other hand a jug of water and a jug of DEF look exactly the same, thus the people who use it, refill with water and return it.

If you don't want to taste it and you can't smell it stick the end of the hose into the liquid. Shake a few drops onto the plastic container, in a few minutes it'll chrystalize and turn white if it doesn't it's not def. Noel
