Washing Machine Smell

First, thank you all for your advice and help. These forums have been invaluable.

Our 2018 Aspire has a front loading washer and separate dryer. I think that's a common configuration for Entegra but I don't know for how long.

In our configuration (44W) the washer door must be closed most of the time due to the cabinet doors. If they were open we wouldn't have access to the rear/main bathroom.

Perhaps from being closed, our washer tends to develop a bad smell. It's easily fixed by using a commercial washer "cleaner". We put it in and run it empty and if fixes the problem for a week or two, but then, if we don't run a load for a few days, when we open the door is smells bad, or at the very least it doesn't smell fresh.

We can leave the door slightly ajar but that doesn't seem to be allowing enough air circulation.

Have others had this issue? Any thoughts on suggestions on mitigation?

Thanks in advance for any help.

We have the 45W Cornerstone. DW always dries the bottom of the door seal. If you don’t get the water out of the bottom it will mildew and smell. She also leaves the washer door unlatched. You can still close the outside doors with washer door unlatched.

She also puts a couple paper towels in that lower seal area between each washer use.

Hasn't been a problem in the washer in our 2019 and we dont do anything special in leaving doors open. I would be looking for some reason that yours does..... not draining fully, or some other reason there would be more than usual collection of water in dark places. I know that this is a common problem in front load washers.... my son and daughter in law keep buying them for their house and keep having problems with smell, but we have not had this problem in our unit.

You’re right, not letting your washer dry out is probably why you are getting the smell. As others have mentioned, drying out the gasket will help. In 2019 they went to a single sliding door which on the Y model, made it difficult to keep the washer door open all the time so I ordered the old 2 door style just so DW could keep the washer door open. They have to be able to dry out or they will smell.

I have the sliding door also, but the DW keeps a towel to prop the door open a little and the sliding door will pass over the washer door. Haven’t had a problem.

Yeah I suggested different ways to my DW but she wanted 2 doors so that she could keep one side closed while the washer door stands open. So I said yes ma’am and changed it!

We also have the sliding door - I dry the door and gasket and don't latch the door when not in use. The sliding door closes easily and we never have had an issue with smell. IIRC, others having the odor problem in the past had an issue with the hose being pushed too far down the drain. It could be fixed by either pulling the drain hose slightly back or pouring a little water down the drain. Something about the elbow trap drying out. I don't remember details but might be worth checking.

I used a mildew disinfectant spray around the door and gaskets. Then we started using Downey Stoppables pellets that are scented. Hasn't been much of a problem since and the clothes smell great.

X2 - DW uses a washcloth, after drying both seals, to wick up any moisture from the bottom of the door and leaves it there with the door ajar and closes the cabinet.
