I use a unit from this company Homepage | HydroFLOW USA, Water Conditioner, Cost Savings, Hydropath, Water Treatment, Sustainable I have the HS38 unit. This is not a chemical process. It is a AC electrical ferrite unit which cycles at 120 kHz (120,000 time per sec) to electrically charge scale forming particles, causing them to clump together in suspension, instead of collecting on the walls of water pipes and heating units. As a side benefit the electrical induction causes bacteria to absorb water until they burst. The suspended minerals and bacteria are removed by my two house filters, which I replace every 60 days since I am fulltime. Other than the water filters, there is no maintenance to the unit. The cost is about $450 but my aquahot thinks it is worth it. I have all the pamphlets on the unit for anyone interested in more info. Send me a PM

How do you exercise it. Does it need that activity whether or not using a water softner?

Since there are many models of Aqua-Hot with differing configurations it would have helped to know which specific model you have in order to answer your question. However, with that information lacking I have included a PDF document from Roger Berke which describes the location on a couple different units and how to troubleshoot any problems with the mixing valve.

Permanently installed Water Boss, works for me. Auto cycling, just add salt. Installed in AquaHot compartment.

Water softeners replace Calcium and Magnesium ions in the water with Sodium. Some people with sodium sensitivities, or sodium reduced diets (salt) may need to avoid softened water if it is their primary source of drinking water.
|
When any water softener is maintained and operating properly the amount of sodium in the water is insignificant.

A search of the web reveals very little with the exception of the company's website.

I have the 8000 unit and it works great here is a recent test strip comparison
Outside water and inside through the softener, Tampa LD's site.
Chart showed 1000 hardness outside while water inside was 180 this was after being on the road for awhile so not a fresh cycle on the softener.

On your 2013 Anthem the tempering valve should be in the same place as the 2014. It is on the backside of the Aquahot unit and be accessed from the PS by crawling in and unscrewing the carpeted panel on the back of the Aquahot unit. It should be exercised even if you have soft water (as I do) and I do mine once a year.

The beads turned very dark orange where the new beads are a light amber color. I could also see water spotting where I didn't before. I think I posted photos and there are also a few videos on youtube. showing when it is time to change the resin and how to do the change. It is about a 10 minute job.
I purchased the resin at my local water softener store for $25. It was enough to change the resin almost 2 times.

This should answer your questions about how to test HydroFLOW
