Hi all...I searched far and wide to find a forum that comes recommended...this one falls in the "Highly" recommended category. I don't know much about forums...somewhat confusing but I'll try to navigate it the best I can. I know even less about RVing since I only ordered one 3 weeks ago. (never had one b4) It should take 10-12 wks then the learning begins. I will no doubt be asking a bunch of stupid questions...and yes, there IS a such thing as a "stupid question"...trust me.

I'm from Southern Ca and my wife and I along with a 3 1/2 leg chihuahua and a 83 lb mix plan to really use the RV when we get it. My first question is...should I consider spending the money to buy a front wheel up dolly to drag our Prius around with us? Will we find ourselves slaves to the RV park wishing we had brought the car or just the opposite? And, since this RV is slated to get 16-18 mpg, from you guys experience, how much of a reduction would you suspect we would get? Thanks in advance guys.

Welcome to irv2. I personally wouldn't go anywhere without a toad. Others will have different opinions. Since you'll be getting about double the fuel mileage that most rvs get , a slight reduction shouldn't hurt too much.

Welcome!

We have a tow dolly for my wifes Scion iQ. We dont take her car everytime bacause I don't see it as a PITA to unhook and take off with the motorhome. My advice is to try RVing without the dolly first and then rent one to try it out before you put the big bucks down on a tow dolly.

Kevin-B...Thanks, that scenario crossed my mind as well. I think we'll go that route. I had been pricing the dollies...I've seen them anywhere from $895. to $4995. Renting first is a great idea. Do you know off the top of your head how much of a reduction in mpg it was for you when you towed...percentage wise?

The curb weight on the iQ is 1,900 and the dolly is around 300 lbs. The Sprinter tows this set up so well I don't even notice it's there and haven't seen a big change in MPG.

It depends on what we are planning to do & how for away from civilization we will be staying. When we go to Big Bend Country we pull our Subaru Outback all four wheels down. When head near a big city we just go with the Navion & drive it in town, very easy to park. As for fuel mileage, we get @ 16+ with out the tow and 12 - 14 with . Has a lot to do with how big a hurry im in to get to my destination, if ya know what I mean.

We purchased a 2006 View a year ago for weekend use. I don't miss the toad we used for the ten previous years. The sprinter is easy (for an RV) to park and maneuver in town, but we do park further from the places we want to see in populated areas. We have driven about 10,000 miles this year just to give you an idea of our time on the road. Also it will make a U-turn with in three traffic lanes so going back to a missed exit is not a major problem. One big advantage to towing, you can stuff a lot of things into a toad. Enjoy your new toy!!!

Donut lover: I used a dolly to tow a car one way from CA to TX. Of course the rental yard did not have one with fresh tires, when I asked about a spare he laughed. The fewer moving parts while you enjoy the RV the better. I'd almost opt to get a nice Subaru and tow with ease. When I re-size my RV I'll use the Wrangler that others in the forum use. The Wrangler has limited space for passengers and stuff, but it is fun off-road. I like the Subaru, great cars.
