Sprinter Shimmy

Just purchased a new 2019 Jayco Melbourne 24L.
Have noticed that at about 60/65 mph I'm getting a shimmy that I can feel in the steering wheel. Had tires road balanced, no change. Tire dealer even install new different brand tires, no change. Changed back to original's. Sometimes the shimmy goes away but always comes back. Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you correct it? Love this rig except for this issue. Upside is it keeps me from speeding.
Thanks for your help.

I would take it to a MB dealer that works on the Sprinter RV chassis. Could be a rim that is not perfect round but there are other things too. But any MB dealer that sells the Sprinter chassis should be able to find the problem.

X2 on getting it to a MB dealer that does Sprinters. The imperfect rim suggestion is always possible.

The shimmy is probably not in the tires, it's likely in the suspension. Something an mechanic once told me "new don't mean good". The point being that just because something is new doesn't mean it was manufactured correctly. Something else to think about is large doors that don't latch tightly. I once had a Chevy Astro van where I chased a vibration for months. After losing more of what little hair I had left I finally figured out that it was a worn latch post on the rear door. On smooth pavement no vibration, once I got over 65 mph and hit rough pavement is shook until I slowed to 65 mph. The point being that it could be many things. Try and see if particular road conditions, engine accessories (A/C, heat etc.) cause the vibration. It can really tough to find them but keep digging it ain't supposed to be there. Good luck.

We have a 2018 Jayco 24L and have noticed a shimmy around 63 mph. We switched out the front tires for Michelin with no change. There was some difference on road surfaces that had a "right lane slope" verses a flat left lane. The flat surfaces seemed to make it worst.

Our fix, at least until somebody find a solid cause, would be to keep under the threshold for the shimmy.

One theory I've been toying with is that the large overhang on the Melbourne lifts the front end. We've noticed that there is a "neutral" airflow over the windshield. Watch raindrops that hit the windshield and you will notice that they do not flow outwards as would normally occur with the speed you are traveling. All that air passes over the top rather than across the windshield. Since the front overhang is shaped like a wing it must have some effect creating lift. Perhaps vortex generators might disrupt the airflow but that will take some time to determine where to place them.

Congratulation on you new Sprinter. FYI: We changed out our folding mattress after it compressed down from our body weight and didn't return to normal.

What did you go to for a replacement mattress?
You could be on to something about the overhang. Sure wish someone had an answer for the shimmy. I hate when you pay big $'s and there's issues. I won't be satisfied until I get it taken care of.

We purchased a mattress topper from Ikea and placed it onto two mattress' we picked up as part of folding cots from Big Lots. We are working on an empty house and brought our folding cots to sleep on. Decided to stay in the RV so kind of pieced together the bed but it beats driving around Los Angeles to find something that might fit.

Another issue we believe occurs with the folding mattress is that body heat condensates underneath and allows black mold to form. We laid bed pads to absorb the moisture but it condenses on the cooler underside of the slide out just the same.

Regarding the sloped lane versus the flat lane: When driving on a sloped lane, the RV is cantered into the wind, that is, the right side leads the left and cuts into the air flow first. Of course, getting miles without a strong crosswind might help prove that theory.

Does the new Sprinter have a better horn? Ours sounds like something found at an amusement park on shuttle buses.

Horn is a complete joke. Horn on my bicycle is louder. Have a call into Mercedes dealer about shimmy but of course no call back yet. Seems like the moment you buy a vehicle everyone goes mute. Why they call it customer service beats the heck out of me.

I wonder if people with Sprinter motorhomes without the cabover have the shimmy issue. That might give us a lead on the problem.

Oh ya, I installed a set of these. They fit under the hood really nice and simple connection using a connection to the existing plug into the OEM horn, run across into the driver side under the hood to a 30A relay (supplied in the kit) and power supply off the fuse block on the other side of the firewall. Simple install and I have a real horn that's not an embarrassment.

Something that's always got my attention with these cabover coaches on Sprinter Chassis.
Have you tried having your rig weighed on all four corners?
Having weighed my LTV a few times I know how close these units are to being overloaded. Whenever I see one of these cabover coaches I have to wonder how they get away with all that extra weight from the overhang above the cab.
If this were mine, I'd take it to a place that can do a four corner weigh in with all your normal gear, full fuel tank and water tank. You might get a surprise.

Just my 2 cents worth,,,,

P/S, my LTV drives as smooth as silk..... no Shimmy. Factory Continental tires.

MY 2016 Prism 24G does not have the cab over. I get a vibration in the steering wheel between 42 and 45 mph. I had the wheels balanced and the alignment checked and it was in spec. In the last 1400 miles (14750 total), I have worn out the outside of the passenger side front tire. I had a tire shop look at the tire today and they believe it was a tread separation in the Continental Vanco tire. I put my spare on, which was a good learning experience that I am glad I did not have alongside the road in the rain with semi's whipping by.
