I sent an email to Magnum earlier today about the AGS not starting the generator. .

I believe I will 1st try to do a reset on the AGS Control Module.

I just want it to work

Here is the reply from magnum....

Hello Bob,
When testing the auto generator start module make sure the house batteries are at 12 vdc or higher because the generator start off the house battery bank. Test vdc on pins 3-4 at module if at 12+ vdc press the test button on AGS module. The status led should start to blink then the relay will close for 6-7 pins 10 seconds then across 5-6 for 20 seconds. When 5-6 close the generator should start then status led should go solid from run signal to pin 2. If this does not work reset AGS module by taking out green 8 pin connector then plug back in. Take a jumper wire across pins 5-6 of AGS module and generator should start if these are correct wires. If generator starts wait for run signal to pin 2 then jump 6-7 to see if generator stops. If jumping 5-6 start gen and 6-7 stop generator then the wires are correct. Reset module again remove wires in 5-6-7 and run test and check continuity across 6-7 for 10 seconds then 5-6 for 20 seconds.

Bob,
thanks for posting this procedure!
I may need it some day.
It would be interesting to see if Magnum engineers have any problem with the proposed switch to chassis batteries. I don't see a problem but they might have an issue we don't know about.

I think switching generator starter to operate from the chassis battery is very good solution. In my case I changed AGS power supply/monitor voltage to chassis battery and it works good for me. The added benefit is that I can see both chassis and house battery voltages over the internet. I have Magnum Ethernet MagWeb module installed and with RV in storage 60 miles away I can see what is going on with batteries and solar system.

UPDATE

I did the reset and also manually jumpered the wires at the AGS to start & stop the generator. It started & stopped ok. But I could not get it to start when depressing the “test” button on the AGS module.
I then called Magnum & told them what I did & problems I was having. The tech told me that the ready light should be lit all the time & if it blinked even once that tells him that the 12 volt supply to the AGS has dropped below 10.8 volts and the low voltage would cause the AGS module to drop out.
I placed my volt meter on pins 3&4 while depressing the test bullion and when the starter kicked in, the darned generator started up. I then tightened the screws that held the wires on terminals 3 & 4. I have run the test procedure 5 or so times and it started up every time. I also ran the test from the remote panel inside the coach and it always starts. So maybe all the trouble was a loose wire on terminal 3 or 4.

The tech said that if I ever tested the incoming voltage to the ags module and it dropped low ( lower than 10.8) when the starter kicks in, he would advise running 2 new wires from the coach battery bank to the module & to be sure to place a 5 amp fuse in the line.

I am truly a happy camper now

Bob,

I'm glad that you got the problems with you AGS corrected. I'm curious to see if it continues to work properly after a few days when the batteries are slightly more discharged. Please update your post if/when you run another AGS test. Thanks.

Hello Greg,
I tested the AGS this morning and it works great.

To be sure I do not lose any of my house battery reserve by any
parasitic loads there may be when I am not using the coach,
I installed a heavy duty disconnect switch. It is similar to the
one on the chassis battery circuit.

I used a Blue Sea Systems , single circuit model 3000 switch purchased
from Overtons & had a Good Sams discount.

Now I need to install my air horn. I ordered a Klein air horn (model 102)
I’ll install a selector switch near the dash to be able to choose the factory
electric horn for use within city limits and the air horn for highway use.

Hello Greg,

I finally got time to reroute the generator positive start cable from the coach battery post to the chassis battery post like you did on yours and it works perfect now.

Thanks for posting your idea, it sure helped me out.
