Take a look at my original photos on the issue and you will see how I propped it to put it back in place. I used the slide brace put out at the longer length with some cushioning on each end.
If you have a larger drill it is indeed a challenge to get in to drill through the bracket so you can put the new screws in place. Also there are some spots that once through, there must be some metal ridge in the bunk so the self drill will not go in. I had a couple of false holes in the bracket and had to move over. My drill that I used is a small lithium from Bosch that managed to get in the spot, but I did have to change bit extensions and the position in the chuck to get these to work.

idk... I think philips screwdriver might not be the right tool for the job. If you look closer, a square bit is used to torque these down.... but you have to check.... The tool produces a lot of torque, one of the reasons why a lot of these head screws are being sheared off (over torqued). Good thing is if you get the right size bit... these can easily be taken off if you get a drill (or manually) or square screwdriver.... something like this:

Replacement screws
The replacement screws are actually hex head, I think 3/8 if I recall correctly. I actually snugged up with a ratchet and socket once the new screw appeared to be in place.

Good catch on the square head, I didn't look that closely. The specified fastener is a self drilling one. Is it anchoring in metal or wood behind the plywood? If metal, then drilling a 1/4" past the bracket as I suggested wouldn't be a good idea.

I think in my case this is best left to someone who knows more than I do. I'd rather not take any chances. I sent an email to Steve Reed last night and included a link to this post. I hope he can fit me in at the end of July when I work my way back through Elkhart on my return home to MD.
I must admit that I'm really paranoid. I had these same screw heads pop off all around the front and rear caps so I know firsthand that it doesn't take much for them to break apart.
Thank you for all the information.

Wow! Those little screws really concerned me! The overhead bunk was the one "big" warranty repair that I had performed when my 2014 Hurricane 34E was still covered. The Schwintek slides, rails, motors, and gears as well as the right front cable were all replaced under warranty because they failed. The right side lost it's controller timing and the motor gear chewed up the aluminum rail before shattering the pinion gear and snapping the support cable. But I had never heard of those little screws!
Ever since the repair, (and NEVER partially lifting or lower the bunk, only full up and down), my overhead bunk has been deployed many dozens of times.
I immediate peeked inside of my cabinets. They appear to have the correct big screws installed!

Yes. Those appear to be the correct screws. Glad to see there are two. Interesting to note that the plans for the bunk prepared for Thor by Lippert, do not specify the number of screws.

Bob and Rita so sorry to hear about your near catastrophic event with the overhead bunk! We were so glad to hear no one was hurt!!!
It sure did catch our attention, also right around the same time there was a post where the cabinet fell as well.
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f281/chec...os-299786.html.
We went right out and looked at our coach and see they have changed this design knowing it was under rated and did not use the screws you shown but 2 of the larger 3/8 hex head screws, in addition to address the other post mentioned it looks like they doubled up on the screws supporting the cabinet as well based on the picture they provided.
Once again we were happy to hear in both cases no body got hurt and hope your post reaches as many as possible to make sure no one does!
Safe Travels to All.

They must have changed at the factory. After hearing this story, I decided to check and my 2015 already has the bigger screws in them. Glad you are all OK.

Glad you have proper fastenings, however the screws weren't "changed at the factory" but installers started using the fastenings that their own specifications called for.
In an even more optimistic outlook, maybe someone is actually checking that the proper fastenings are being used for such a heavy object that is suspended over the driver's head!
