Need a new BIRD

After 18,000 miles and two years it appears I need a new BIRD. The house batteries have stopped charging while driving. I assume I can change it myself if I pay attention to how the old one comes off, correct? Now the real question. Do I call my dealer for a stock one, or is there a better option?

If you have some free time when you order look around on PDXRV they carry a vast array of stuff.

Looked up the score, closer than they were predicting.

Rick

I thought you watched them. Actually closer than the score showed. Never a real problem, but the kept hanging on.

Does this also require change of the solenoid?

Rick--When you changed your BIRD, did you also change your solenoid? The techs at Elkhart changed both for me when I was there in May 2014. They noted that the solenoid was a weak link in the system. So far I have had no further trouble.

I had a J1939 error which is a Freightliner electronic error message. It is what happens when the dash goes out and the gauges go haywire. The cure for that is to switch the batteries off in the battery bay. Basically rebooting the computer. After that I started getting low battery warnings, so I thought it was the J1939 error that blew up the BIRD. Are you telling me I might need more than the BIRD?

Bob I tested the solenoid it it was good, no voltage drop across it and I could jump it with a test lead and it would activate. Just was not getting sufficient voltage from BIRD. Changed the BIRD and it is working fine. I hope you are getting past renovations and have been able to travel some, say hi to Rita.

Heading to Goshen

Rick--Glad you posted about the solenoid. I am sure that will help with anyone needing a change out. Yes--We are in the last hours of this renovation with the painters just finishing up. We will have the electrician come back right after we get back from the rally in Goshen. I'm sorry you will not be there. We miss you and Karen. We are also headed to a mini rally at the Outer Banks and have decided to go early so we can attend the sea food festival in Nags Head. I have to get the the Goshen rally early so we can be set up in time for the Clemson-ND game at 8 pm Saturday. Go Tigers!
