25RDS hitch question

The wife and I just picked out a new Timber Ridge 25RDS. During the buying process, I had a phone conversation with a dealer to let him know I was buying it from someone closer to me, he was understanding with that decision. During that phone call he asked about the TV and what hitch setup we were using. He suggested a new hitch setup such as a 12k four point sway control WD hitch. We will be pulling it with a 2009 3/4ton Chevy diesel. I saved the hitch setup from our last trailer thinking I would just reuse the same 10k 1000lbs round bar set as before. Now that phone call got me wondering what others owners of the 25RDS and a similar 3/4ton TV are using for a hitch setup.

A 10k hitch might be pushing it. The listed dry hitch weight is 720 lbs, so by the time you add in two full propane tanks and batteries, you're likely at or over 1000 lbs. I bought a 14k hitch for ours in the event we ever went up in size and I could reuse it.

Thanks for the input RB. Did you choose round bar or straight bar? I’m sure the dealer will be happy to set me up with a new hitch at delivery.

Round bar, but I'm not confident I'd make the same choice if doing it again. I'm more a fan of the trunnion style now. There are a number of others in here with the 25RDS that might chime in too.

Well I have the same setup - 10K with 1k bars. The way the dealer set me up, the bars were almost touching the frame and 5 links over - this caused a wild ride home . Before my next trip I took my hitch ball up a notch and dropped back to 2 links over on the chains. Now everything rides level and smooth.

My hitch is the one from my previous Sunnybrook. A 10K with 1K round bars. It's pulled the 250RDSW to the Rally 4 times now and will do again. Got the old friction anti sway and the holes for the round bars in the hitch head show wear. It still works just fine.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I'm on the fence about buying a new hitch or just trying the old one and seeing how it does. I do like the idea clamp on brackets, instead drilling into the frame to mount the sway control mount. Somewhere I read the frame is an 8 inch frame, and the day we picked out the unit, I didn't have a tape measure on me to verify. Does anyone know if the A frame section is also 8 inches or is it 6 inches?

No way is the A frame 8". 6" is the norm and 4" is used as well.

My frame is 6" My dry hitch weight is 909# so I used the Sway-Pro 1500, with the clamp on brackets.

Why go cheap on the hitch? The new hitches with built in sway control are a big improvement over the round bar hitches. Easier to use and better performance.

I'm leaning toward a new hitch. Just so many options and factors as I want to be able to open the tailgate when the trailer is connected. Does anybody out there with the 25 RDS and x4 suspension know the hitch height when the trailer is level?

Yikes... 31 inches is really tall. Are you measuring from the ground up to bottom of the coupler?
