I definitely see that coming (all of the above) over the next few years. When gas prices spiked back in 2008 ($4.20), people stayed closer to home and opted to pay for a seasonal site at their local campground.
We like to make state & national park reservations 6+ months ahead. This way I know I'll get a nice shady river front or lake front site. This season we have 10 weeks booked up.
One of my campgrounds in Vermont (private campground) was already booked up for Labor Day Weekend back in Jan. So I rearranged my route to stay there a week before Labor Day, and then found a place in New Hampshire for the 4 night stay over Labor Day Weekend.
