Hum from Progressive EMS-HW50C
Got my EMS installed tonight and I'm pretty disappointed in how much noise it makes. It's under the sink, behind a panel and there is still an audible hum coming from it.
Is that normal or is there something amiss? It's working just fine.
If it is normal, does an EMS create much heat? Could I pack insulation or some sound deadening material around it?

Call their tech line, they’re fantastic to deal with.

My 30 makes no noise as far as I can tell.

Our portable 50A Progressive make a very faint hum, barely audible. It's outside, so we don't care.

A 60 cycle hum that loud, is in my opinion, not right. That hum is usually the contractor portion of the unit. Contact Progressive and get a tech on the phone.

I did a Google search on this, found hundreds of complaints like yours.
Apparently Progressive recommends mounting them with 1/2" rubber feet, much the same as mounting a water pump to reduce noise. They say it's a 60 cycle hum caused by the contacts inside. They also suggest keeping the back space for ventilation. They will get warm when loaded close to max amps.

You had me go outside to check on my "just purchased" Progressive Ind. portable EMS 30 amp unit. If I get my ear 6" away you get a very very slight hum. The unit is just very slightly warm near the top of the unit. Both in-coming and out-going power cords are cool to the touch. I'll agree with Monk, that they are very good to deal with. Originally I was going to get one of their lower protection units, but I liked all the added features in the EMS-PT30X after talking to one of the tech's.

I unmounted it so it was free hanging in the air and could still hear it from a long distance away. So, rubber feet wasn't going to fix this one.
Called Progressive and they said to return the unit. New one in route!

Replaced it with a new unit and it still hums, though less than the last one. You can hear it from about 10' away, provided it's quiet and nothing else is running.
I put felt feet on the bottom since that is what I had laying around. It is a smidge louder once I mounted it to the exterior wall underneath the sink. I'll go down to ACE and find some rubber feet to try out.

Give it some time after you install it with the rubber foot trick.
The contactor inside has to seat itself, and burn off any residual crap that may be on the surfaces. I've read that if you cycle it about 10 times it will go away.
Just normal use will maybe accomplish this.
