Luggage Key Latch Help

The other day I went to open the storage area door. They key was unlocked and the dead latch was open as well. It was a wee bit stuck so I started jiggling it a bit. The door did open but at the same time the cam lock embedded its self deeply in to the door. Fortunately it did not penetrate the outside skin of the door. My first thought is to reinforce the door where the cam lock is with a washer. But that won't work because there is not enough room between the bottom of the door and the lock. An thoughts on how to fix this?

Make a backing plate that will clear the door, wider than tall. You could also cut or grind the washer.
