Removing Self Leveling Sealer

Has anyone found an easy(?!) way to remove the roof sealer from vents and the rubber without damaging the EDM or Rubber? Thinking maybe a carefully controlled heat gun on lowest setting to tenderize it while scraping? I have 5 places I will need to get all the way to the membrane, then patch it somehow.

I don’t think you’ll ever be able to get absolutely all of it off, but scraping can get most. Wiping on a small amount of mineral spirits will also really soften it and could make it easier, but do not put too much on because it can cause damage to EPDM in enough quantity (ORV’s maintenance seminar at the campout endorsed using it as a surface prep cleaner).

Low heat, heat gun or hair dryer, and light, slow scraping will almost get down to the epdm. What will be left will be pretty much like a new application, sticky. Need to work slowly, without stopping movement of the heat source. It can be done.

Ive had good success with heat gun method and plastic scraper. Go slow, mineral spirits after to clean surface area.

I use these, they work well with mineral spirits or heat gun. They are made from plastic and called Non marring chisel set. They are available from various sources in Canada and the US.
