Rust on new/on the lot 23KTS

I'm a newbie to RVing and have been looking hard at and researching ORV and specifically a 23KTS. I'm a ski patroller and would mostly use it for skiing.

I can't believe the amount of rust on this new trailer. This trailer is new on the lot. This will be garbage in 5 years. If I take this to the salty beach it will only accelerate the rust. Why is there no primer or similar protection used in the automotive industry used on these trailers? This is unacceptable to spend 36k on. Click image for larger version

The rust is quite common, the ground is always
damp to a degree. After I purchased my MH,
I went thru 15 cans of the 3M high quality undercoat.
Pretty much rust free after 9 years now.

That looks pretty bad. I'd get on it asap.
It's possible that it picked up a fair amount salt during transport.

Clean it up good with a wire brush and buy a case of gloss black rustoleum or something similar.

We camp at the beach frequently and will touch ours up as needed.

Have fun with the new trailer!

Thanks all for the comments. I have not purchased this trailer. This is sitting new on the lot and I'm really not interested in purchasing a rust pile.

I've seen new Jeep Wranglers that look like that. I wouldn't buy one that isn't rust free.

That's a bad case of lot rot. It's too bad we have to shoulder poor quality on top of hefty coach prices.

We got ours off a lot in northern Nevada and it has weathered 2 winters so far and ours doesn't have any rust like that. Looks like the frame was out in a lot of rain before they built the trailer.

Depending on where the trailer is located, and when it was delivered to the dealer from ORV, that rust is very possibly caused by the crap on the roads in the winter up here in the northwest. Just think what it would look like back east!!!!

Northwood and ORV have really slacked off from QC the last few years. My 6 year old Fox Mountain has very little rust. Most of what is there is from abrasions or on exposed items like bolts or the like.
I guess they figure that if people buy other MFG's junk then why not turn down the QC to save money.

Many things to discuss at the rally.

Do you really think they'll start adding thicker better paint? I don't. When sales decline then maybe.

That amount of rust is not normal. My 2017 is rust free and was delivered in winter.

I'll agree that is way too much rust for a new trailer, and do wonder aboot whether ORV is cutting corners in "hidden" areas!!! To me the pics do look like some road salt damage, even the axle tubes are somewhat impacted, but the backing plates and drums look good. Just my opinion, but it could be better with just a bit more or a better paint!!

Our "early" 2016 was built in mid Feb 2015, and bought in mid April. So it would have come over Cabbage Hill in late winter or early spring. It is good underneath, with very little rust. So something has changed or on certain construction days, the crew is slipping!!!!
