Surge protector
Hi all,
We just bought a Glacier Peak 30RLS but can't bring it home 'til this God forsaken weather in Minnesota improves- the way it looks tonight it may be July...
Anyway, I started picking up stuff we'll need and a surge protector seems to be pretty high on the list.
Anybody care to weigh in with what we should look at? I know it'll need to be a 50 amp unit, but which one?

Personally I think a hard wired EMS would be a better choice than a portable device as it can't be stolen or left behind but that's just me.

Bought this one this AM.
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I noticed over the last month while this sat in my cart that the price went up and down regularly, I just waited patiently until it was at a price I could live with.

That's the way I see it too. I had the 30 amp on my last coach and the 50 amp now. No Problems. Progressive EMS

X2 on the hardwired. If it walks off or I forget it I have bigger problems than losing a surge protector. Went with the progressive, as all components are "field replaceable".

And you do want an EMS, not just a surge protector.
EMS protects against low voltages, mis-wired pedestals and other conditions besides surges.

Hard wired EMS. You don't have to do anything but plug in. Can't forget it, have it stolen or get too lazy to use it. No worries.

One thing about a hard-wired EMS: you will probably want a cheap tester to verify the pedestal wiring before going to the trouble of backing in and setting up. And *then* discovering that your EMS detects a pestle mis-wire.
This happened to me a couple of times before I bought a tester and now we always pre-test the pedestal before.
Or if you go for the portable EMS version, plug it in before hand to check.

Went with the portable PD 50 EMS in our RLS.
Permanent install looked too involved, tight spaces and running wires thru the wall for the remote monitor.
Mine has done it's job well. Found a bad ground (pedestal issue) on the last trip. Moved to another site while they repaired the bad one. Nothing like a hot skin on the RV
Note on dash of tow vehicle prevents my feeble mind fogetting the thing.

Another vote for the hard-wired Progressive for three reasons: no theft risk; the actual surge suppressor board is replaceable, protecting at least part of the investment; and the status readout is really good information about the AC side of the system. It was a bit of a pain to install in the space behind the converter reaching through the drawer opening, but only took about a couple of hours.
It did protect us from a temporary over-voltage on the second trip we had it too!
