this cant be rocket science but... whenever i pull the cap off the gray/black drain pipe to hook up the stinky slinky, waste comes pouring out. the blade valves are closed so i assume something busted. or am i missing something?
man its gross.

If you’ve got both handles pushed in then yes , something is broken.

Have you tested to see which it is??

With both handles pushed in, with a hose attached with a clear connector, turn On the water at the kitchen sink and wait ... if you see water at the clear connector outside , then you can think it’s the grey valve.

If you do t see water then next go hold the toilet open forcing water into the black tank, have someone else watch the clear connection and if you see water there, then it’s the black tank valve

Until you figure it out you can put one of these on the pipe where the cap currently attaches. That way you won't be getting the mess when you remove the cap.

Jay nailed it. It sounds like the valve seals have failed and need to be replaced. While you got your hands dirty you might as well do both valves.

Man, great idea on the external valve!!!

That thing goes where your sewer goes in between the rv and the hose, and it will hold all that back until you’re ready

Just leave the hose connected and tied up in a coil on the side,,,, LOL.

Either the gate valve oring is leaking or something is in the way of valve closing all the way. I had it happen and found brown trifolded paper towels half in and out keeping valve from closing.

thanks everyone. i filled gray and black tanks with fresh water and exercised the valves. the black tank valve worked fine and felt solid and shut off the flow so i feel pretty good it isnt that one. the gray tank valve felt less "solid" when i closed it but it did stop the flow. i then used a pressure washer to backflush the system. it all seems ok and maybe something was preventing it from closing. with that said the gray tank valve handle feels less solid so i'm still concerned. now the problem is taking off the sheet of insulation to take a look. it covers the whole underside and its riveted on so thats going to be a pain. great idea about the valve at the end of the drain, $22 at amazon so that will be piece of mind until i get a better plan. thanks again everyone, i appreciate the guidance

I had put the additional gate valve on before leaving for this trip. I’d had a few similar experiences with a leaky valve, but they were cleared with a run of water through them. I put the additional valve on so I wouldn’t have any accidental spills. I do worry that if they leaked behind the new valve the weight of the water in the pipe might cause bigger problems as your driving down a rough road. So I make sure I flush the errant valve and clear the problems they happen.
