2000 Rexhall American Clipper

Hi all
I have a 2000 Rexhall American Clipper and having trouble with the motorhome starting. When I turn the key to the on position the radio will come on but none of the gauges will come on and will not start. I have to wait for a few minutes until the gauges come on before it will start. I have cleaned all of the ground cables and still have the same problem. Has anyone had this problem. Thanks for any help.

It would appear to be a problem with the neutral/park switch. If attempting to start in Park, put the shift lever into Neutral and it should start. This happens to me occassionally and this is usually the solution.

Is yours built on a Ford or Chevy/Workhorse chassis?

If chevy / workhorse, I would look at the ignition switch mounted at the base of the steering wheel. The rv manufacturers had a tendency to add too many accessories on the ignition switched circuit causing the switch to overheat, so later on workhorse came out with a retrofit relay kit see here for the 01+ instructions, yours should be similar, but the fuse box may be different on the 7.4L http://www.oemys-performance.com/media/wh%20ignition%20relay.pdf

Thank you, this is a Chevy/workhorse. I will pick up that part and install it first thing tomorrow morning.

I wanted to let you all know what I found, my fuse box is different than the instructions. So I was looking at everything around the steering column and found this. Motorhome sat over night so everything was cold. I turned the key to the on position and the plunger (in the picture) did nothing until it stayed in the on position for about a minute then the plunger was pulled down and everything came on, all gauges and steps and it would start. So I need to find out what this is and repair or replace it. Thank you all for the information.

Sorry, not sure, you may try posting in the question in the workhorse chassis section
