Fuel Tank
Hi There
We live in New Zealand and brought in a 1994 Rexhall Airex motorhome
The fuel gauge has started to play up (drops to E when the key is turned on)
The petrol tank sounds empty when you tap it yet I cannot get any more fuel in without blowback.
Is the fuel tank double skinned?
Any ideas what could be wrong.
Cheers Jim

Hi Jim! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
Congrats on the new rig! If the filler tube goes fairly straight into the tank you may be able to insert a long straight rod to see if there's fuel in there. Keep her between the ditches!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Sounds like tank VENT is blocked/obstructed.

Fuel gauge

I seem to be able to add fuel each time I go to the pump and it seems to be about the quantity I would have used before it stops filling. So I am assuming the tank is full. The fuel gauge seems to sit on about ¼ until I turn the key on and then it drops to E. Also the generator is turning over but not starting and I am thinking that it is tied in with the fuel gauge and thinks there is not enough petrol left.

From your 1st post .....
"The petrol tank sounds empty when you tap it yet I cannot get any more fuel in without blowback."
Generators typically have their own fuel pickup.....common to be at 1/4 tank level so that generator can not fully empty fuel tank and leave one stranded.
So IF you can pump fuel into tank in quantity you 'think' you used then sounds like fuel gauge circuit/sending unit etc is shorting out

Sure this is a silly question, but are you sure you are tapping, and the gauge is reading, the right tank?
My Airex has two petrol tanks, a main and a reserve, with their own fillers. There is only one fuel gauge on the dash, which reads whichever tank is selected. Selection is a toggle switch on the dash.
There is also a line from each tank to a manual selector valve just in front of the generator bay to choose which tank feeds the generator.

Didn't realize any non modified MH would have two tanks. I know it's done with pickups.

Thanks Haven't noticed a separate filler and no toggle switch on the dash. What year is yours? This is a 1994

I have searched for what you describe and can find nothing. Are your separate fillers in different places or in the same place but you have to do something to fill the other tank. Can you post a photo of 1. Fuel filler place (or places) 2. Generator selector and 3. dashboard toggle switch location.
Cheers Jim

Fuel tank
If you have a Ford chassis, you may have a fuel logged float, a common problem. Quick test: Open wire to tank sender shows FULL, ~47 ohm to ground shows about 1/2, short to ground shows empty assuming the gauge end of the circuit is working (on my 1990 anyway).
