Iowa to Gulfshores AL

We will be heading out next week. We plan on taking hwy 27 to hwy 61then I 55 down to hwy 45 then cutting over on hwy 158 to I65 to avoid the tunnel then down to I90 and over to I10. Unless there is a better route. Is there anything on this route we should not miss or anything we should avoid?

Are you talking about the tunnel in Mobile? If so why are you avoiding the tunnel? I travel it a lot in my 40' motorhome along with a lot of RV's.

Why not I55 to Jackson, 49 to Hattiesburg, 98 to Mobile, hook up to I10 however you want and take that over to where ever you want to drop down to Gulf Shores?

Yes the tunnel in mobile. We have never been to GS and i guess I just assumed the MH would be to tall for the tunnel.

This is our first trip to GS and we thought we had the best route mapped out. Would your suggestion take us right through memphis?

Yes, I55 will take you through Memphis.

There are two options to take from I10 to Gulf Shores. The first one you will come to will be Hwy. 59. This is the most direct route, but also the slowest route with a lot of traffic. But it may not be bad this time of the year. The next one is the Baldwin/Foley Beach Express which happens to exit off right beside a brand new Buccee's (opened January 21). This will be faster. Depending on where you are staying I would take this route.

To clarify my above answers there are two tunnels in Mobile. The one on I-10 is used all the time by RVs and 18 wheelers. There is another tunnel on Hwy. 90. This one CANNOT be used by RVs and big trucks.

You would be better off staying away from HWY 49 south of Jackson MS. There are many small towns with traffic lights . A better route is to stay on I-20 to Meridian MS and take HWY45 south to Mobile. My wife has a “thing” about tunnels so we go around Mobile and get on I-10 just east of the tunnel.

Is there more than one tunnel in this area?

Looks like the smaller tunnel is only 12' clearance.

Surprisingly a big truck will go into it on a regular basis and plug it up.

What to see

If you are still in the area you need to go and see the USS Alabama at the military park. Also go to Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines at the mouth of Mobile Bay.

A nice campground we have stayed at is Dauphin Island campground. If you want to check it out take the ferry from Ft. Morgan to Dauphin Island. The ferry comes out at the entrance to the campground on Dauphin Island. While we were there we went to Bayou La Batre and bought some fresh shrimp off the boats for $5.00 a pound. This place is where Forest Gump was filmed.
