I use the GS Trip Planner to plan my route(s). I can access it from any of my devices, it has a pretty comprehensive list of features, including dragging a route in order to use a specific road. The new version is missing a feature that I liked in the previous iteration, the ability to draw a circle with a known radius, say 300 miles, which is about what we travel in a day. I could then look at campgrounds along that circle. What I do with the new version is to "guesstimate" the 300 mile region and then add any campground in that area. The program will then give me the incremental mileage to that spot. If it is around my 300 mile target, I then start looking at all the campgrounds in that area and use repair reviews and Google earth to make my final selection. Once my route is finalised, I download it to my GS Rand McNally GPS unit, print it to paper, has the turn by turn directions, so the wife can verify the route while rolling, or, take over completely if the GPS fails. I also print it to PDF for permanent storage on my computer.

The process works for us, there are no fees, no reliance on cell towers or data usage (once the plan is set). I don't have to worry about upgrades or patches to either the program ( GS handles that) or the GS RM GPS (that has Lifetime maps and patches.

It works for us.

I have been trying hard to get this working. I think the desktop OS X app has a lot of promise. I've added campgrounds from the POI Factory. Of course, it interoperates with the Garmin GPSs. Then I should be able to transfer the trip to the GPS and take off!

Is there not a MacBook version of CoPilot? We have smartphones (just jumped ship from iPhones back to Android) and many Apple computers. We RV with a couple of MacBooks. We don't have an iPad and won't be getting one.
