Wink Southern New Jersey to Charleston, SC

We are towing our 23 foot TT from South Jersey to Charleston SC in June. Already have reservations for Charleston KOA. We would appreciate any advice on campgrounds along the route. Usually bypass 95 thru Baltimore & Washington. Thanks for the help!

Route 13 to 17 is a alternative to stay off of I-95. 17 goes through myrtle beach then right to Charleston. Lots of campgrounds in myrtle beach if your stopping along the way. Pirate land in myrtle beach is nice. There are 3 campgrounds there side by side by side. I think one of the others is Country shores. Have fun.

Cherry Hill Park is nice. It is in College Park, MD, located just outside 495 loop at north end of Washington, DC. If you want to visit DC, there is a subway (Metro) station close by that you drive to or you can catch a bus that comes into the campground and take it to a Metro station. Coming south around Washington, 495 on the West side of DC seems quicker to me than the East side but the East side is more scenic. As you approach I-95 South at the south of DC, traffic can be very thick and slow and sometimes does not let up until Richmond.

If Myrtle Beach is on your route to Charleston

The three campgrounds located side by side in Myrtle Beach are Ocean Lakes Campground, Lakewood Campground, Pirateland Campground. If you are staying for any length of time in Myrtle Beach, Ocean Lakes is the superior campground, although all are nice.
Ocean Lakes has easy online reservations as well which show you the lengths. Concrete pads available for many sites. Very clean, a waterpark, well-stocked campground store, snack stands with great ice cream, and daily activities. I book 18 months in advance to get two weeks oceanfront over the big holiday times but I don't think shorter stays and non-holiday weeks are in as high demand. It's a nice family place. Lots of fun.

What I've done leaving Cape May County is to go up to Delaware Memorial Bridge take I95 South to the exit for US 1 / US 301 (It is the second exit once you get on I95) and then take US 301 up the Eastern Side of the Chesapeake. Rarely packed with traffic and has a rest stop in the middle between I-95 and when you cross the Chesapeake at US50. Once on US50 you exit off and get back on US301 and eventually end up at Ruthers Glen at I-95 before Ashland, VA. If you like Flying J's there is one there at I-95 with RV lanes. Then I stay at Americamp Campground in Ashland. It is across the highway from the Bass Pro Shop on I-95. Real nice place. Then I would go directly to Charleston. We did Charleston last Easter and stayed at the KOA. Lots to see, Fort Sumter tour was well worth it and had some great Barbecue at Rodney Scott's Whole Hog Barbecue.

The other route I have taken is the Cape May Lewes Ferry down Rt. 13 to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and back to I-95 then to stop at either the RV Park at Roanoke Rapids, NC (just below the NC/VA border) they have 10 spaces for self check-in if you arrive late or you can make reservations. Very reasonable and a good location for just a stopover. If I feel like traveling longer I go to Camp Pedro at South of the Border. Open late and another place with easy in / easy out and reasonable rates.

You are probably looking at anywhere between 12-14 hours total travel time so it depends on how you want to split it up.
